Andrew Bird — Echolocations: River (Oct. 6, 2017)
ζ≡ Hrdina Tais Awards/Harvest Prize.

Description:
ζ≡ Andrew Bird’s newest piece Echolocations: River is slated for release October 6 via Wegawam Music. Recorded ankle deep in the Los Angeles River under The Hyperion Bridge, the instrumental release is the second in a series of short films and recordings documenting site-specific compositions. Performed by Bird chand filmed by Tyler Manson in remote and acoustically unique environments, the first installment, Echolocations: Canyon, was released in 2015. Nowness described how Canyon “reverberates with otherworldly sound.”
ζ≡ Echolocations: River will be brought to life live onstage this fall, featuring visuals from the film. The debut of these performances takes place October 12 at Los Angeles’s Zebulon, tickets for the performance are on sale this Friday. Bird continues his current world tour with performances in the U.S. See below for a complete list of dates.
ζ≡ Chicago~born, LA~based film score composer, multi~instrumentalist and lyricist, Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. As a teen Bird became interested in a variety of styles including early jazz, country blues and gypsy music, synthesizing them into his unique brand of pop. Since beginning his recording career in 1997, he has released 12 albums, his most recent being Are You Serious (2016), of which NPR proclaimed, “[Bird’s] writing keeps sounding warmer, sweeter, more thoughtful and approachable, while continuing to land lines that stick with you for days.”

ζ≡ The eight~track LP Echolocations: River follows Echolocations: Canyon, released in 2015, making it the second release in a series of instrumental albums where Andrew Bird writes and records music in a specific outdoor setting.
ζ≡ Recorded under the Hyperion Bridge in Los Angeles, Bird waded in ankle~deep water as he recorded this instrumental album. The release is the second installation in a series of short films and recordings that document recordings from specific locations. ζ≡ The locations involved allow for sound quality not easily discoverable or even replicable in the studio.
ζ≡ Bird picked up his violin at the age of four and promptly bathed amidst the fathers of classical composition. It was not until his teenage years that Bird’s violin began to sound more like a fiddle, when he found an interest in early jazz, country blues and gypsy music. He combines all of these things into his own sound, creating something akin to popular sound while maintaining a post far from it. Bird has released twelve albums since 1997.
ζ≡ NPR described Bird’s progression as a musician after reviewing his latest release, Are You Serious.
ζ≡ “[Bird’s] writing keeps sounding warmer, sweeter, more thoughtful and approachable, while continuing to land lines that stick with you for days.”
ζ≡ Bird’s new project is surely an interesting experiment with sound and location. Fans of his music are accustomed to innovation and musical progression despite his consistent instrumentation, a definite indicator of his inventiveness on the violin.
