With the release of her 2005 debut, Anya Marina reinvented herself as a modern-day Renaissance woman: actress, comic, disc jockey, and quirky songwriter. After appearing in the film 100 Girls (a role that required her to shave her eyebrows), she replaced her film aspirations with radio. She decamped to San Diego to work as a DJ for 92.5 FM, and the increased presence of music in her everyday life helped fuel her own songs.
Before long, Marina had created a buzz in San Diego as a songwriter. Miss Halfway, her debut album, cemented her status as a promising local musician, and a spot on the Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack helped spread her music to a wider audience. The sophomore album Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II arrived in early 2009 following Marina’s inclusion in the all-female leg of the Hotel Café Tour, and the self-produced Spirit School EP appeared in 2010.
For Felony Flats, the singer/songwriter introduces a little electro and darkness for a more interesting sound. There’s a sly, almost sexy/sultry element that runs throughout Felony, from groovin’ opener “Body Knows Best” to the swaying, wry title track goodbye closer. It often shows up in electro elements that add, but don’t overwhelm, such as “Body”, restrained dark “Believe Me I Believe”, indie-push “You Are Invisible”, and small-but-ominous “Heart Stops”. Yet Marina is also able to pull out the sweet – “Notice Me” is endearing without being saccharine, while “Hot Button” is a tiptoe procession. Plus, she’s also able to rock – garage-rock press of “Flinty” or rock push to penultimate “Speakeasy”.
Anya Marina might still make more money off her songs being on TV than of any albums, but that’s just the way things are these days. And Felony Flats shows that she’s not staying put on records. // The self-produced album sees Marina joined by guitarist Cody Votolato (Blood Brothers, Telekinesis), bassist Jeff Bond, drummer Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, Mister Heavenly), and Blitzen Trapper’s Eric Earley, who contributes additional piano and guitars.
“If albums are like children, this one is my favorite (don’t tell the others),” Marina said. “It’s the one I put the most heart and soul into. It’s the one that taught me the most about myself, and it’s the one that looks most like me.”
