Living in Symbol je ódou nejednoznačnosti, budoucnosti a jak sám říká ‘tak dlouho’ zkoumanou. Je členem poslední generace, prožívající život před érou úplné propojenosti. Anthony Ferraro (digitálně známý jako Tony Peppers) se snaží být mostem mezi dvěma velmi rozdílnými realitami. •…      Ferraroovo přátelství s Chazem Barem, které spoluvytvářelo album, začalo skromně: Chaz Bear vstoupil do kavárny, kde pracoval Ferraro během návštěvy UC Berkeley [pozn.: Kalifornská univerzita v Berkeley (University of California, Berkeley, zkráceně UC Berkeley) je státní univerzita v Berkeley v Kalifornii. Je nejstarší z deseti kampusů Kalifornské univerzity (UC), byla založena v roce 1868. Zabírá plochu 2692 ha. Podle Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) je to druhá nejlepší univerzita na světě. Kromě 24 nositelů Nobelových cen a čtyř astronautů, včetně Margaret Rhea Seddon, zde absolvoval i bubeník kapely The Police, Stewart Copeland.]. Ti dva se stali přáteli, a když Ferraro graduoval/absolvoval následujícího léta, nabídl se mu jako TOUR klávesák pro Toro y Moi. Nás příběhy zajímají, aby ne! •…      Tony Peppers (aka Astronauts, etc., née Anthony Ferraro) lives just outside of time. His best friend’s father told him in the 4th grade that he was really an old man. It makes some sense, then, that he was diagnosed with arthritis at age 10 and dropped out of school at 20 because he really needed to think things over. He still is, but at 27 Tony has some things to say, and he's saying them on his new album, Living in Symbol.
•…      It’s been a circuitous seven years for the Oakland~based classical pianist turned pop arranger. Between stints on the road with Toro y Moi, he wrote his first LP, Mind Out Wandering. Recorded mostly live to two~inch tape, the album was a conscious departure from the bedroom pop direction of earlier material. Its production was precise and nakedly clean, showcasing the musicianship of his band and earning comparisons to early Bee Gees records and Philly soul.
•…      When Chaz Bear (Toro y Moi) offered to produce his next album, Tony began devising a collection of songs that would capitalize on the intersection of their sensibilities. The world had begun growing rapidly stranger, and he found his reference points shifting toward outsider music, Latin psychedelia, and the haunting orchestral arrangements of David Axelrod.
•…      A new voice was coming out of Tony, taking cues from oracular crooners like Lee Hazlewood and Kevin Ayers and delivering cryptic messages pitched far below the falsetto that had come to characterize his sound. It would seem disjunctive if it wasn’t so natural; you can hear Tony finally stepping into himself as Bear’s production carries the songs onto a bizarre and timeless wavelength. ••      Living In Symbol is an ode to ambiguity, the future, and saying ‘so long’ to the known. A member of the last generation to experience life before total interconnectedness, Anthony Ferraro (digitally known as Tony Peppers) aims to be a bridge between two very different realities.
••      The spirit of change is especially pronounced in California’s bay area, where technologies dawn and disruption is the noblest goal. Critics and advocates of all stripes write columns and fill talk radio hours with their analyses of the times. Ferraro is a funny case: a sometimes Luddite with a romantic streak, he would probably be a doomsayer if it weren’t for his being situated in the middle of it all. As it happens, he ended up writing a generative music algorithm that sold on auction at the Smithsonian for $5,000.
••      His take on tomorrow is nonjudgmental, meditative, imaginative. It keeps away from unqualified hope or outright alarmism, choosing instead to embrace the indeterminacy as food for dreaming.
••      Ferraro’s friendship with Chaz Bear, who co~produced the album, began modestly enough: Bear walked into the coffee shop where Ferraro worked while attending UC Berkeley. The two became friends, and when Ferraro graduated the following summer, he signed on as touring keyboardist for Toro y Moi. Musical bonds were forged over the next few years, and the pair began collaborating on what would become Living In Symbol.
••      Sonically, the album weaves its influences into an alien drapery. “The Border” introduces Latin psychedelia to a groove à la David Axelrod, setting the stage for a vocal performance that manages to be equal parts Lee Hazlewood and HAL 9000. On “The Room”, a Borgesian story gets dressed up in an eerily graceful string arrangement reminiscent of Les Baxter. And “Who I Talk To” nods to George Harrison in a soft rocking arrangement that supports Ferraro’s ghostly croon.
