Bon Iver is a Grammy nominated folk band founded in 2007 by American indie folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. It includes Michael Noyce, Sean Carey, and Matthew McCaughan. Vernon released Bon Iver's debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago independently in July 2007. The majority of that album was recorded while Vernon spent three months in a remote cabin in northwestern Wisconsin. The name Bon Iver is derived from the French phrase bon hiver, meaning "good winter" or "have a good winter".
Bon Iver will release a deluxe edition of Bon Iver on Jagjaguwar Records. Though it will feature no new material from the Bon Iver sessions, the deluxe edition will serve to expand the musical experience of the original album by including 10 short films that are meant to accompany each of its songs—in other words, it aims to translate the music of Bon Iver into a cinematic, audiovisual experience.
Bon Iver is the Grammy nominated second full-length album from American indie-folk band Bon Iver, released on June 17, 2011.Bon Iver’s second album was rumored to be Letters for Marvin but was later confirmed to be Bon Iver. The album is composed of 10 songs and takes a new musical direction. “I brought in a lot of people to change my voice — not my singing voice, but my role as the author of this band, this project,” says Justin Vernon, band leader and founder, who hired well-known players like bass saxophonist Colin Stetson and pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz. “I built the record myself, but I allowed those people to come in and change the scene.” The second album is described as an “ambitious musical departure” from the first.

"And at once I knew I was not magnificent." So sings Justin Vernon in Holocene, his ethereal falsetto serene as he absorbs another of life's burdens and disappointments. The line snags you for two reasons: it's one of the few comprehensible lyrics amid the album's whirlwind of poetic obfuscations; it's also nonsense. Vernon's most magnificent act on this follow-up to 2008's solitary, introspective For Emma, Forever Ago, is to open Bon Iver up to the world. That expansiveness influences everything, from the way the song titles reach beyond Vernon's Wisconsin home to the number of collaborators (10) and their intricately textured sound. In opening track Perth, you can almost hear Vernon exit his cabin in the woods to be dazzled by the colours and brightness outside, communicated in bold military drums and surging horns. But whether exploring supple R&B in Minnesota, WI, joyful country in Towers, or swollen soft-rock in Beth/Rest, Bon Iver remains rooted in the emotional sincerity that made Vernon's debut so mesmerising. // *****

The weather was perfect for Bon Iver's set. Even Justin Vernon said so. Backed by a threepiece band, Wisconsin boy Vernon, in a white T-shirt and jeans, welcomed the downpour Saturday afternoon, opener "Creature Fear" ending with a thunderbolt of noise. In fact, it was the noisier jams where Bon Iver excelled. Vernon's critically lauded 2008 debut, For Emma, Forever Ago, tackled depression and solitude, his rubber-band voice the saving grace among simple guitar. Live, songs from Emma, as well as the title track from new EP Blood Bank, took on a new life; harmonies were spot on, and at one point, his backing band was all playing drums. The midsection of the set started meandering with Vernon solo on guitar, but closers "For Emma" and "The Wolves" rekindled the flame. Thanks to his songs being featured on a variety of student-friendly TV shows, Vernon's appeal has doubled in the last year – quite a few guys in backward hats and Longhorns shirts singing along in the crowd – but the sensitive singer-songwriter veil was lifted during those final moments of cacophony.
