Description:
≈ "Michigan trio Breathe Owl Breathe has been notably silent in terms of new releases since 2010’s Magic Central, but the band is return with a follow-up album, the seventh full-length in their decade-long career, entitled Passage of Pegasus.
≈ For the first time ever, Breathe Owl Breathe employed contributions from artists such as Michael Hurley, Jim Becker (Califone, Iron & Wine), Victoria Williams, Kyle Field (Little Wings) and Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats, The Shins), who produced the album.
≈ Passage of Pegasus continues to Breathe Owl Breathe’s penchant for vivid imagery and extensive harmonies. “After discovering some slides and reels stowed away during the intermission of The Godfather, this song took shape,” says band member and songwriter Micah Middaugh. ≈ “The song has a life of its own, with lighted windows and high ceilings."

Album Review:
≈ Long-running Michigan trio Breathe Owl Breathe spun their intricate sound so patiently and considerately over the course of more than a decade that they slowly transcended the folk and indie scenes they were born from, growing into an entity based on storytelling and instrumentation that became more unique and unexpected with subsequent releases. Sixth album Passage of Pegasus finds the band coming into its finest hour so far, with singer/songwriter Micah Middaugh's endlessly descriptive lyrics breathed out in a Bill Callahan-esque croon and absorbed by the woven tapestry of counter-melodies, production, and shifting instrumentation from bandmates Trevor Hobbs and Andréa Moreno-Beals. Distinguished by Moreno-Beals' Zen-like cello lines and Hobbs' multi-instrumental juggling, the joyful and reaching instrumentation accentuates Middaugh's vividly imaginative lyrics on tunes like the monster movie meets awkward mumblecore movie soundtracking of "Silent Movie Reel" and the electro-tinged character study song "Explorer." Passage of Pegasus represents Breathe Owl Breathe at their height of experimentation in production, and also finds the trio calling on some friends they made on tour to help out with the proceedings, with guest spots from folk legends like Michael Hurley and Victoria Williams as well as indie luminaries from Little Wings and Fruit Bats. Approaching a dreamlike state while remaining rooted in a decidedly earthy sound, Passage of Pegasus is the strongest work from the band so far, and points to even further progress toward something fearlessly unique and songs as curious as they are exacting.
REVIEW
By Billy Hamilton; Author rating: 7/10
≈ It looks like Breathe Owl Breathe have finally decided to grow up. Here, on album number six, the Michigan-based trio have replaced the idiosyncrasies of past records with a tonal consistency that runs throughout these 10 folk-pop strains. This change of tack creates a perfect platform for the rich, emotive baritone of Micah Middaugh to thrive. Each song — in particular "Ferns Move" and the gorgeous "Two Moths" — are fraught, tender tearjerkers that swoop through a fug of pert percussion and grievous strings. And while it may not be enough to win over new fans, this refreshed approach will see Breathe Owl Breathe age well with the ones they've already got. (http://www.undertheradarmag.com/)
