“At the Beach — Music for Voice and Electric Bass”
ΘΔΘ We enjoy the interplay of our two musical positions tremendously. I really
feel this has to do with a “storytelling” or an “intuition for the narrative” that we both have. And I mean it even in the most general, abstract sense says David Moss. ΘΔΘ Together with Hannes Strobl, they’ve found rhythmic and even philosophic connection that made the duo work, as a natural extension of their earlier project, the band Denseland, created with Hanno Leichtmann. I was working on a collection of pieces for electric bass, where I wanted to explore some of the different musical and sonic possibilities of the instrument, that usually can't be heard very often says Hannes Strobl.

ΘΔΘ “When Hannes told me he had developed a number of solo bass pieces and songframeworks that might be interesting for my voice, we easily and fruitfully created this album”, explains David.
ΘΔΘ “At the Beach — Music for Voice and Electric Bass” is a story told
in music. It starts with the specific sound of the electric bass, an instrument played mostly in pop, rock or jazz, but rarely found in contemporary, experimental music. Most of the time the instrument is played in a very traditional way, where it has to fulfill its function within the arrangement.
ΘΔΘ So the player is not only playing on the instrument but the instrument is also playing on him, the tradition of the instrument. David broke with that kind of tradition as a singer and found his own unique way to use his voice, so I felt a strong connection with him right away says Hannes Strobl. Strobl created a special way of playing the electric bass and combines his two instruments — one of them an electric upright bass — with various electronic devices. Each piece on this album brings together particular advanced playing techniques and preparations with particular electronic setups.
ΘΔΘ Together, the pieces make the impression of being a single cohesive work with an intimate quality, sometimes moving forward with a steady drive, sometimes rotating around themselves. In some places, the music is very physical and microscopic, one can hear how the strings are scraped or how the vocal sounds start. In other places it keeps the secret of its genesis, playing with the possibilities of psychoacoustics.
ΘΔΘ David Moss brings the sounds, texts, stories, narratives and ‘mystery geschichten’ out of his mind in a stream of consciousness. He uses points within the rhythmic patterns to connect to or to jump from, to dive off to new words or new sounds. The connection that the words and sounds have to meaning switches on and off.
ΘΔΘ When Hannes developed those bass based pieces and played them for me, I started singing immediately. The first take was always as if we were playing live together, so I did not listen to the piece before I jumped into his “worlds” with my voice says David Moss. After those live acts, David sometimes did other takes of vocals, either completely different approaches, or trying to amplify the idea of the first take. At the end, the perfect version of the voice, the one which fit the mood, atmosphere
and energy of composition exactly, was chosen.

Fellowship; in 1992, a DAAD Fellowship (Berlin). Moss sang with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle, made his Carnegie Hall debut with the American Composers Orchestra, and was twice a featured soloist at the Salzburg Festival. He is

In PL:
ΘΔΘ “At the Beach — Music for Voice and Electric Bass” to pierwsza płyta nagrana przez Davida Mossa i Hannesa Strobla w duecie, jednocześnie jest to album stanowiący naturalną kontynuację muzycznego dialogu, jaki obydwaj artyści prowadzą ze sobą od lat.
ciekawe album “At the Beach — Music for Voice and Electric Bass” powstał w całości podczas improwizowanych sesji nagraniowych. Gdy Hannes przygotował i odtworzył mi swoje basowe kompozycje, słowa same przychodziły mi do głowy, następnie zaś
ΘΔΘ Hannes Strobl to jeden z najoryginalniejszych gitarzystów basowych, kompozytorów i artystów dźwiekowych działających w Berlinie.

DAVID MOSS
ΘΔΘ David Moss is at the forefront of new, composed and improvised, contemporary music. He is a pioneer of the solo concert form, and has presented over 1000 solo percussion and voice concerts around the world. First as a percussionist, and now as a singer and unique vocalist, he has collaborated with composers, theater directors, and opera houses throughout Europe, Japan, and the USA. Over the past 2 decades he has become known as one of the most innovative singers and powerful, extreme vocalists in the world.
ΘΔΘ David Moss has expanded his musical work to include stage/screen performer, theater actor, opera singer, and performance/voice character in experimental avant-garde art works. Because of his 4 & 1/2 octave range and his wide vocabulary of vocal sounds and characters, he is in-demand internationally as a "unique and powerful voice" for a new generation of composers and opera directors.
ΘΔΘ "Moss sounds like Jim Carrey doing an impression of Ella Fitzgerald while being eaten by the creature from Alien."
ΘΔΘ David Moss received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1991 for music/sound composition, and moved to Berlin, Germany in 1991 as a recipient of the prestigious Berlin DAAD artist fellowship. Since 1991 he has sung as soloist and performed with numerous festivals, orchestras, ensembles, and theater companies, culminating in recent performances with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic; as Nino in Luciano Berios' last opera, "Cronaca del Luogo", and as Prince Orlovsky in a scandalous staging of "Die Fledermaus", both at the Salzburg Festival.
David Moss has also performed in:
ΘΔΘ “Surrogate Cities”, by German composer/director, Heiner Goebbels; Olga Neuwirth's opera version of David Lynch's "Lost Highway"; the Ensemble Modern's Frank Zappa project; Carla Bley's "Escalator Over the Hill"; and had recent premieres in the Spoleto Festival, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Venice Biennale, and the 5th Conference of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in Rome.
ΘΔΘ In 1999, Moss conceived and co-founded (with Muziektheater Transparant), the Institute for Living Voice, of which he is currently Artistic Director.

ciekawe album “At the Beach — Music for Voice and Electric Bass” powstał w całości podczas improwizowanych sesji nagraniowych.

ΘΔΘ “The singer David Moss is cantorial, David Byrne-ish, Beat-cool, raving post-Berio in the mad gabble of the city.” — [Real Time Magazine, Australia]
