Gerry Beckley — Carousel (September 9, 2016)
⦿→ Singer/songwriter best known as a founding member of the ‘70s soft rock outfit America. Beckley, Bunnell and Dan Peek were all Air Force brats who met as teens while their dads were stationed in London. Did growing up in military families influence their music? “Yes,” Beckley says, noting that the frequent moves and travel gave each band member “a far wider scope” of inspiration when writing songs.
⦿→ America’s song “You Can Do Magic,” a #8 US hit in 1982, was written by Russ Ballard. As a member of the band Argent, Ballard wrote their song “Liar,” which became a hit for Three Dog Night in 1971. His songs have been recorded by Roger Daltrey (“Come And Get Your Love,” “Free Me”), Rainbow (“Since You Been Gone”) and Frida (“I Know There’s Something Going On”), but he is most closely linked with Kiss, as he penned several tunes that either the band or its members have covered on solo albums, including “God Gave Rock and Roll to You” (retitled as “God Gave Rock and Roll to You II”), “New York Groove,” “Into the Night,” “Let Me Rock You,” and “Some Kinda Hurricane.”

⦿→ Gerry Beckley, co~founding member of the legendary rock band America, release a solo album Carousel recorded at his Los Angeles studio Human Nature.
⦿→ The 12~track collection, Beckleys first studio effort since 2011’s “Unfortunate Casino”, features mostly original material, along with three cover tunes — Spirit’s “Nature’s Way,” Gerry Rafferty’s “To Each and Everyone,” and the 1964 Gerry & the Pacemakers hit “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying.”
⦿→ Never lacking for creative outlets — he writes, he plays guitar and piano and bass, produces — it’s not a surprise that he did Carousel virtually by himself. Beckley’s son Matthew helped on production as did old friend Jeff Larson and a few other special guests.
⦿→ “With a solo project I’m really a committee of one,” says Beckley, who continues to co~lead America with fellow founding member Dewey Bunnell. “There’s only myself to please. Having said that, it’s not always easy. Each project is a snapshot in time. The material on Carousel came from a wide scope of inspiration.”
⦿→ Among the original songs on Carousel are “No Way I’m Gonna Lose You,” a tune Gerry co~wrote with Adele collaborator and former Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson, and “Tokyo,” which Beckley penned during a trip to Japan.
⦿→ Beckley says the three covers on the album are “from my long list of fave songs.” He adds that “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” is a tune he’s been singing “virtually since it came out in the ‘60s.”
