Description:
♣ Janis Esch is an Americana/alternative artist based in Carbondale, Illinois. Her sound is balanced between ache and joy, imbued with a unique sense of American earth and soil. She is known for powerful vocals delivered with a delicate touch.
♣ Her first full–length album, Steal From the Poor, was released by Union Hill Records in November 2015. Her timeless voice and virtuosity of prose are on full display in “Tonight” and “Nearer to Me,” while the tanked–up grit and echoed overdrive of “Lake Town” are reminiscent of tracks from Wilco’s “Sky Blue Sky.” The distant sound of a kick drum gives way to heartache on the up close and personal “Damage Is Done,” and with an astral hue, the title track illustrates the authenticity of her writing while invoking the sounds of Sigur Rós.
♣ Esch’s lyrics carry a heavy load on the modern country tune “One Time Shy.” Carbondale’s close proximity to Muscle Shoals, Ala. becomes apparent as Esch puts her love on the line with the fiery slide and point–blank guitar leads of “Tell Me The Truth.” The album achieves cathartic closure with “Colorado,” a haunting yet hopeful ballad that builds from a live room sound to an explosive finish and leaves the listener longing for more.
♣ “Steal From The Poor” represents the standard Union Hill strives to achieve with every album. “Steal From The Poor” is available worldwide for purchase on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Mp3 and CD Baby. For a preview of “Steal From The Poor” visit iTunes. Upcoming tour dates to be announced.
