Joy Division — Closer (40th Anniversary) [2020 Digital Master] (18 July, 2020)   
■  Žánr definující post~punková skupina, jejíž zpěvák Ian Curtis zpíval o zoufalství a izolaci až do své tragické sebevraždy v roce 1980. Pokud album „Unknown Pleasures“ charakterizovalo Joy Division v jejich nejsmyslnějším, pečlivě soustředěném á la neoFederico Fellini (Roma, Amarcord) — albu v deseti obrazech,  „Closer“ bylo rozlehlou, chaotickou explozí, která šla různými směry současně. Kdo ví, jakou další cestou by kráčeli, kdyby si Ian Curtis nezvolil svůj konec? Po tomto datu se však vyhýbejte opakování všech jejich textů; považujte Closer za to, co si stejně všichni ostatní mysleli — že vše řečené bylo již od počátku — jednoduše další album — a zdá se, že i síla Joy Division rostla. Produkoval ho Martin Hannett, ale zdá se, že zde mění přístupy jako i samotná kapela — různé mixy, odlišná atmosféra, nové zvraty a obraty. To vše definuje album jako celek, písničky dělají náhlý comeback v nasekané, zmačkané formě a končí syčením a náhodnými poznámkami. Otevírák „Atrocity Exhibition“ byl pravděpodobně nejvíce frakturovanou věcí, jakou kdy kapela nahrála. Sumner svou kytarou brousí zuby (primárně známý jako vedoucí guitar man bandu, jeho hlavními kytarami byly Gibson SG a custom Shergold Masquerader)... a bubeník Stephen Morris.  Ten v „Can~on~speed“ udělal chytrý začátek. Klávesy Transcendent 2000 také zaujaly přední místo více, než kdy jindy — ve čtyřech skladbách, jsou trochu utopené, ovšem na nich je založeno Curtisovo stinné sténání, např. v „The Eternal“, těžký syntetizátor v energické, ale vypatlané „Isolation“ a především ‘Decades’, no a... tím album končí. 
■  Mimochodem basák Peter Hook dnes draží věci po celé éře a když dostal otázku „V jakém stavu je kytara, kterou dražíš?“, odpověděl: „Když se někdo naposledy dotkl mé kytary z doby Joy Division, byla víceméně ve stavu jako když naposledy hrála. Bylo to prostě vloženo do jakýchsi „odložených případů“. Byla mimo zraky lidí, ale nikdy nebyla vyčištěna nebo tak. A to je docela divné. Vůně a esprit, patina éry na ní patrná je prostě úžasná, protože je spojena s tak fantastickým příběhem.“ 
■  Shrňme si to: dlouhá, pomalá procházka dolů a outdoor, Curtisův portrét ztracené mládeže, nevyhnutelně aplikovaný na sebe sama.  Jeho pohřební zvuk strings syntetizátorů zní jako rekviem. Písně jako ‘Heart and Soul’ a zejména ohromující ‘Twenty Four Hours’ jsou perfektní ukázkou napětí / uvolnění v soft~hlasitém přístupu, záleží na tom, jak kdo slyší, jednoduše prohloubí zážitek. Joy Division byla na vrcholu svých sil, vyrovnávala a patrně i vylepšovala úžasné album „Unknown Pleasures“, což je výsledkem práce všech čtyř členů. Rock, jakkoli je definován, se málokdy jeví a zní tak životně důležitě a tak vitálně, aby všemu odolal nebo vše ignoroval jako právě zde. Je to čerstvě a s předstihem vyleštěný náhrobek. Ian Curtis je bolavým těžištěm hudby, točí se nehybně jako socha na piedestálu bez vzpoury, skleslosti a rezignace. Slyšet album znamená truchlit vzhledem k tomu, co ještě mohlo přijít — a naopak oslavovat to, co již bylo.

■  Joy Division recorded only two albums before singer Ian Curtis tragically took his own life in 1980. But what the Manchester quartet lacked in longevity, they more than made up for in quality. The two albums were pioneering and helped shape the sound and mood of the alternative music that followed in the band’s wake.
■  Joy Division will be re~releasing a 40th anniversary edition of sophomore album ‘Closer,’ on 17th July 2020. The release follows last year’s reissue of the ground~breaking debut album ‘Unknown Pleasures,’ and will be pressed on crystal clear vinyl. 
■  On the same day as the Closer 40th re~release, these three non~album singles ‘Transmission,’ ‘Atmosphere’ and ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ will be reissued with 2020 remastered audio. Since the demise of Factory records, these singles have never been repressed or reissued before and are cut on 180g vinyl, featuring the original artwork on heavyweight board. ‘Transmission’ will feature an embossed sleeve.
■  18th May 2020 also marks the 40th anniversary of Ian Curtis’ passing.

■  Joy Division’s second studio album Closer reissued as a limited edition ‘crystal clear’ vinyl LP in July, for its 40th anniversary. Closer was of course the band’s last album. It was issued two months after Ian Curtis’ suicide (he died on 18 May 1980). There were no singles from Closer, but three non~album singles — ‘Transmission’, ‘Atmosphere’ and ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ — are also being reissued at the same time as the album, with ‘2020 remastered audio’. These are pressed on 180g vinyl and feature original artwork (‘Transmission’ has an embossed sleeve). The Closer album isn’t remastered and uses the same mastering as on the 2015 vinyl reissues (which is from 2007).
■  If Unknown Pleasures was Joy Division at their most obsessively, carefully focused, ten songs yet of a piece, Closer was the sprawl, the chaotic explosion that went every direction at once. Who knows what the next path would have been had Ian Curtis not chosen his end?
■  But steer away from the rereading of his every lyric after that date; treat Closer as what everyone else thought it was at first — simply the next album — and Joy Division’s power just seems to have grown. Martin Hannett was still producing, but seems to have taken as many chances as the band itself throughout — differing mixes, differing atmospheres, new twists and turns define the entirety of Closer, songs suddenly returned in chopped~up, crumpled form, ending on hiss and random notes. Opener “Atrocity Exhibition” was arguably the most fractured thing the band had yet recorded, Bernard Sumner’s teeth~grinding guitar and Stephen Morris’ Can~on~speed drumming making for one heck of a strange start. Keyboards also took the fore more so than ever — the drowned pianos underpinning Curtis’ shadowy moan on “The Eternal,” the squirrelly lead synth on the energetic but scared~out~of~its~wits “Isolation,” and above all else “Decades,” the album ender of album enders. A long slow crawl down and out, Curtis’ portrait of lost youth inevitably applied to himself soon after, its sepulchral string~synths are practically a requiem. Songs like “Heart and Soul” and especially the jaw~dropping, wrenching “Twenty Four Hours,” as perfect a demonstration of the tension/release or soft/loud approach as will ever be heard, simply intensify the experience. Joy Division were at the height of their powers on Closer, equaling and arguably bettering the astonishing Unknown Pleasures, that’s how accomplished the four members were. Rock, however defined, rarely seems and sounds so important, so vital, and so impossible to resist or ignore as here.
