•• "Although widely known these days for her multi-faceted role as Gemma Teller Morrow on hit FX series Sons of Anarchy, Sagal has had a long musical career in addition to her acting career. She has sung backup vocals for Bette Midler, Bob Dylan, Tanya Tucker, Gene Simmons and others. Sagal has released two solo albums to date, 1994 s Well.... and 2004 s Room. She has also contributed music to the Sons of Anarchy soundtrack. Covered is Sagal s first studio album in 9 years, and features a duet with Jackson Browne on Steve Earle s heartbreaking song Goodbye. The album also features covers of songs by noted songwriters Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Ron Sexsmith, Tom Petty, Ryan Adams and more. Season six of Sons of Anarchy, the highest-rated program in the history of FX, debuted on Tuesday, September 10. About the album, Sagal says: Covered is my third solo record. My two previous records were mostly original compositions. This one is not. I was tired of waiting for myself to write, and anxious to make another album. On Covered, Sagal is joined by The Forest Rangers, the house band of Sons of Anarchy, led by the show s music supervisor and musical director Bob Thiele. Thiele, along with noted songwriter Tonio K, also composed the one original composition on Covered, titled Follow the River. Sagal adds, Covered is the combined effort of Bob and myself, discovering and interpreting an eclectic mix of music that I connected with. Some of the songs reflect on my younger life, and some from music I listen to now... material from Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, Steve Earle, etc. All have personal meaning and reason for me to want to sing them."

•• An extremely gifted and versatile performer adept at both comedy and drama, actress/singer Katey Sagal became a household name in the late 80s as the fabulously brazen, undomesticated "Peg Bundy" on the enduring Fox series "Married with Children" (1987). During its lengthy run, she received three Golden Globe and two American Comedy Award nominations. As popular and identifiable as her Peg Bundy persona was, Katey assertively moved on without a hitch after the show went off the air, not only starring in other sitcoms and TV movies, but portraying characters that were polar opposite to the outrageous role that first earned her nationwide attention. •• For example, In 2008, she took on the role of "Gemma Teller Morrow" — the matriarch of a Hell's Angels-esque California biker gang — on the series "Sons of Anarchy" (2008), and in 2011, her portrayal earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series — Drama.
INTERVIEW
— by Gregg McQueen, November 13, 2013
:: You picked some great artists to cover, but not a lot of commercially successful songs. Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” is probably the only really well known selection. I find it cool that some people might be experiencing these songs for the first time through you.
:: Yeah, and I really like that! I think people probably know Ray LaMontagne at this point, but you’re right. I think some people who would buy my record wouldn’t necessarily know those artists other than Tom Petty. “Free Fallin’” was the only one that was a huge hit, but it was just so much fun to record. And it’s really fun to play live.
:: It seems like you’ve released your solo albums about every 10 years apart. Is it because your acting career kept you too busy, or did you simply not intend to focus on music much more than that?
:: I think it’s because the acting kept me so busy. This album took me about a year and a half to finish because there were so many stops and starts during recording, due to other projects. Ever since I’ve been an actress, I’ve always been playing music whenever I can. But it seems that the “whenever I can” part is sometimes infrequent, between my other jobs and also having children — I have three kids. So, I didn’t plan on going 10 years between records but it’s the way it happened. Plus, time goes by so quickly!
