Kurt Vile — B’lieve I’m Goin Down... (September 25, 2015/Deluxe 3 LP Edition) ♠♠ Jaký je? Stále fantastický, jen více nehlídaný a zranitelný. Tentokrát se širokým obloukem vyhýbá Praze po posledních zkušenostech. I tak však má před sebou 38~ti koncertní turné. Berlín (Nov 9, Postbahnhof) nechybí ani tentokrát. Kurt Vile patří Matadoru (29 umělců), z nichž rovná desítka patří ke koňům Tais Awards. The Philadelphia–based musician said that the LP will include some “ethereal, Appalachian–influenced folk songs” and described the new material as more “unguarded and vulnerable” and having a “night vibe”. Vile continued: “The music drones on and on, but in a freer way. There’s a sort of melancholy in the way the music just sprawls. It wanders. Everybody goes up and down throughout their lives. ‘Smoke Ring...’ was a downer, then ‘Wakin...’ was an upturn. My music has to be funny and sad and happy and loving, it's gotta have it all. When somebody’s just too dark all the time, it's just drama. Or if somebody’s too funny? Well, I like being too funny sometimes.”

♠♠ Od frekvenčně výrazně zbarveného hlasu, jakým Kurt disponuje, čekám vždy příjemné a vzrušující pobavení. Nezklamal. Už od úvodní “Pretty Pimpin” jsem v bavlnce. Zvuk zaznamenal ještě výraznější posun od přeexponovaných fuzzies~pop směrem k více rozléhajícímu se, texturnímu a nejvýrazněji introspektivnímu stylu, jaký jsem od něj doposud slyšel. “I’m an Outlaw” vyčnívá hned od začátku výraznou rytmikou a vybrnkávaným bendžem. “Dust Bunnies” jako třetí je už opravdovou lahůdkou s Rhodes Pianem, což je důkaz sebevědomí, hlubších znalostí o potřebách písně, zvuk nabývá na barvitosti. Tento nástroj miluji. “That’s Life, tho (almost hate to say)” je čtvrtá: zase rozšířené zkoumání ve zdlouhavé písni (6:28), není však nejdelší na albu a těchto 6~7~minutovek má na albu hned 3. A dokonce i hlubší pohledy dovnitř, vyprávěčství, rozjímání, hlasovou ohebnost jako registrační marku KV®, ta se táhne celým albem. Melancholická souhra mezi akustickými a elektrickými kytarovými tóny, líně~klasické rockové riffy, dojem ospalého hlasu opět a blízko. Je zřejmé, že u Kurt Vilea není předvádění cílem, aby napodoboval legionáře, pro české písničkáře zůstává přesto vysoce vzorovým. Žádné opičky nebo dokonce aktualizování kánonu klasických kytarově~založených skladatelů, ale jde ještě dál, než Callahan nebo David Eugene Edwards: je to pro mne událost roku, hodně poučná kapitola o jeho generaci jako pevného základu. “Wheelhouse” je další šestková skladba a při ní poprvé myslím na ohodnocení ALBUM ROKU 2015. Snadno. Jeho nejvíce propracovaný masterpiece. Soustředěný a přístupný Kurt. Poprvé klasické piano a dokonce náznak kláves podobných Petru Bardensovi z Camel let 70’. Před šesti lety by se o Kurtovi dalo říct: se slack~pěveckým stylem připomínajícím Lou Reeda (nebo Alan Vega). Dnes je to Kurt Vile a tvůj sluch. “All in a Daze Work”. A po ní vrchol alba: nejdelší píseň “Lost my Head there” (6:57), tady už dokonce přitakává i vibrafon..., jestli mne něco dnes udržuje při touze jít stále dál a žít zhluboka, je to právě taková hudba. Praho, kde jsi udělala chybu? Jenže album zdaleka nekončí a Kurt Vile si k nahrávání vybral ta nevhodnější místa vzhledem k tomu, co chtěl říct: Joshua Tree duch je cítit až do konce ve “Stand Inside”, “Bad Omens” [úchvatná instrumentálka s táhlým kytarovým sólem], “Kidding Around” a “Wild Imagination”. (B.T.A.) ♠♠ Does his own myth~making; a boy/man with an old soul voice in the age of digital everything becoming something else, which is why this focused, brilliantly clear and seemingly candid record is a breath of fresh air. Recorded and mixed in a number of locations, including Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, b’lieve i’m goin down... is a handshake across the country, east to west coast, thru the dustbowl history (“valley of ashes”) of woody honest strait forward talk guthrie, and a cali canyon dead still nite floating in a nearly waterless landscape. The record is all air, weightless, bodyless, but grounded in convincing authenticity, in the best version of singer songwriter upcycling.
♠♠ In Kurt s words, “I wanted to get back into the habit of writing a sad song on my couch, with nobody waiting on me. I really wanted it to sound like it s on my couch — not in a lo~fi way, just more unguarded and vulnerable.”
♠♠ It becomes clearer and clearer with each release, that this “boy/man with an old soul in the age of digital everything” (as Gordon puts it) has a knack for crafting albums that resonate with a large (and endlessly growing) audience of listeners. As illustrated by his new single, “Pretty Pimpin,” Vile is a master of slick riffs and memorable croonage. With a steady delivery and lyrics that seem to roll effortlessly off the tongue, the debut video for “Pretty Pimpin” breathes to life a new Americana comprised of a self~reflective awareness that is raw and relatable. — Kim Gordon
