•♠• If you like a good dose of melancholy over bubbling, melodic indie/electronic pop, then Leyya’s new album Sauna is one for you.
•♠• Sophie Lindinger and Marco Kleebauer are Leyya, an electronic pop duo from Vienna, Austria. Today sees the release of their new album “Sauna”, which was preceded by a single, the evocative “Heat”.
•♠• “Heat” features Lindinger’s gorgeous almost languid vocals over a sparse indie electronic beat and a rousing, charged chorus. Electro melancholic pop that evokes the slow pulse rate of a summer’s day:
•♠• Leyya stands out for not only for Lindinger’s unique vocals but for the innovative experimental use of instruments and sounds in the music (including sitars at one point in third track “Zoo”). “Sauna” as a whole is a catchy, bright and multi~layered album, creating a welcome tension between melancholic vocals over a bubbly pop foundation that at times veers into a jazzy core. “Solitude (I’ve never been Fun)” is a prime example — wistful, heartbreaking singing over a wandering musical path.
•♠• “In Your Head” really showcases the vocals over a sparse, insistent mesmerising single note before launching into a driving, wild blast.
•♠• Earlier single, “Drum Solo” captures the broad spectrum of tone in the album with its melody redolent of Kate Bush:

•♠♠• Das ist schon ein ziemlich markiger Satz. Einer, den man nicht so leicht dahinsagt, sondern nur, wenn man weiß, was man kann. Einer, an dem man sich auch später messen lassen muss. Marco Kleebauer und Sophie Lindinger, unter dem Namen Leyya gerade als „Austrias next big thing“ und für die Wiederbelebung alpenländischer Electropop~Tradition seit den Herren Kruder und Dorfmeister gefeiert, haben kürzlich gemeint: „Man kann uns konsumieren, wie man möchte. Aber wer nach Substanz sucht, wird sie bei uns finden.“ Word. Man muss vielleicht dazusagen, dass es in dem Gespräch um das Verhältnis der beiden zum Formatradio und sogar darum ging, ob denn von ihrer Seite ein Auftritt beim Eurovision Songcontest denkbar wäre. Nun ist ihr klug verbastelter Sound gottlob mit dem windschnittig gestanzten Allerweltsgedudel dieser Tage nicht zu vergleichen, deshalb erübrigt sich eigentlich auch eine Antwort auf die zweite Frage. Erstaunlich und begrüßenswert allerdings, wie sie, nachdem der deutschsprachige Popsong zuvor schon von Bands wie Wanda, Bilderbuch, Einhorn oder Granada erfolgreich geentert worden ist, nun drauf und dran sind, auch die Tanzmusik um Coolness und Lässigkeit zu bereichern.
•♠♠• Was manchem wie ein Debüt vorkommt, ist schon der zweite Wurf von Leyya, gleichwohl könnte gerade mit diesem der große Durchbruch tatsächlich gelingen. Denn das Album verbindet auf beeindruckende Weise eingängige Arrangements mit herrlich vertrackter Klangkunst — wollte man alle Tracks, die sich von gängiger Durchschnittsware abheben, farbig markieren, man bräuchte den Stift gar nicht erst beiseitelegen. Angefangen bei „Drumsolo“ mit Lindigers sanfter Stimme und soften Beats, die angefunkten Bläser zur sorgsam verschränkten Loops von „Zoo“, dessen Video ganz nebenbei noch als hintersinnige Kritik an überkommenen Verständnis der Geschlechterrollen gelesen werden kann, „Candy“, „Oh Wow“, „Heat“ — Leyya wissen, wie man Pop buchstabiert, damit er nicht langweilig, sondern originell klingt. Einflüsse aus Jazz, Trip~Hop, Dub, Synthie werden hier miteinander vermengt, es ist kein Wunder, daß Lindiger den ähnlich perfekten Stilmix der Alabama Shakes und ihrem „Sound And Colour“ zur Lieblingsplatte auserkoren hat, ein Vergleich, den das Duo keineswegs scheuen muß.
•♠♠• Wer die allgegenwärtige Genderproblematik anreißt, wie die beiden dies ja (s.o) ganz bewusst tun, der darf natürlich auch die Deutung des Albumtitels aus den Linernotes nicht unerwähnt lassen: „Die Sauna als Ort der Zusammenkunft, ohne soziale Schranken, wo die Nacktheit aller auch eine ultimative Gleichheit schafft“ — was auf den ersten Blick etwas verwegen und konstruiert klingt, macht durchaus Sinn. •♠♠• Die Hitze hat und macht uns alle gleich, das lästige Schwitzen, das Dampfen der Körper, die sehnsüchtig erwartete Abkühlung, die einem jeden gleichermaßen Reinigung verheißt. Für die nötige Entspannung sorgen Leyya zum Schluss, ganz Dienstleister am Kunden, höchstselbst, „We Did Ok“ vibriert in angenehmer Kühle, an die wunderbaren Portishead gemahnend, dem Fadeout entgegen und beendet eine bemerkenswerte Arbeit. Kurz noch mal zum Grandprix: „Wenn Musik eine gute Geschichte braucht, um zu überleben, faszinierende Personen in Glitzerkostümen, dann können wir einpacken“, so Kleebauer an anderer Stelle des erwähnten Artikels — Leyya werden im März dieses Jahres nach ausführlicher Europatournee auch beim honorigen SXSW~Festival in Austin zu Gast sein, nicht auszuschließen, daß dann der nächste kräftige Karriereschub folgt. •♠♠• The Austrian bands rise happened surprisingly and quick. It started with their very first release at the end of 2014, „Drowning In Youth“, that made waves among the austrian scene first. It was followed by „Wolves“ and an EP, before „Superego“ eventually made them a recognizable name way outside their home, too. The track is currently standing at 2 Million Plays on Spotify and close to 400.000 on Youtube, got support and was applauded by a number of prominent Radio DJs such as Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1, Lauren Laverne on BBC6 and John Kennedy on XFMs Xposure. It went Top 3 on Germans College Radio Charts, gained airplay all across Europe and was featured in several Advertisement Campaigns.
•♠♠• LEYYA were invited to support Canadian band METRIC on their European Tour later that year and established themselves as a great live band at industry events like Reeperbahn Festival (Hamburg, DE) and Eurosonic Festival (Groningen, NL) — where their show eventually was called „the best concert of the festival“ by Germanys Musikexpress. The band continued their trail among Europes tastemaker festivals with shows at The Great Escape (Brighton, UK), Liverpool Sound City (Liverpool, UK), Tallinn Music Week (Tallinn, EE) and MaMa Event (Paris, FR) as well as Electronic Beats at Reeperbahn Festival (Hamburg, DE) — and finally headlined Popfest (Vienna, AT) back home, where they played a crowd of 20.000 in front of the famous Karlskirche in Viennas beautiful City Centre.
•♠♠• Meanwhile, the track and amazing video „Butter“ followed directly in Superegos footsteps with a number of prominent premieres and the #1 spot on the highly influential Radio FM4 Charts.
•♠♠• Crowning highlight of an exciting year was a show at legendary Harpa Venue at Iceland Airwaves (Reykjavik, IS) — yet another great highlight for the young band that Consequence Of Sound called on of their highlights of the festival (http://consequenceofsound.net/2016/11/iceland-airwaves-2016-festival-review-the-25-most-exciting-performances/2/)
•♠♠• Altogether the band played 100+ shows in 13 different countries throughout the release span of their debut „Spanish Disco“. LEYYA are among the Top 10 of 2016s ETEP list, which shows which newcomers have been booked most by Europes most reknowned festivals (the list also features bands like Stormzy, Amber Arcades, Aurora, Lost Frequencies or Jain on the same level).
