By Bertrand Lavaine - 13/01/2012 - As well as playing with an array of Mali’s contemporary music-makers, Makan Badjé Tounkara has carved out a space to share his own stories, which he narrates under his name in a second album, Sodjan. His academic yet modern playing of the ngoni, the string instrument played at the royal court for centuries, leads him irresistibly into the land of the blues.
¶ The key to the musical world inhabited by “Badjé”, dominated by the charming sound of his favourite instrument, lies in the fact that the 46-year-old Malian received an “old school” musical education. His tender years were devoted to assuming an ancestral knowledge that left no time for school.
¶ To be born a griot is to live out an inescapable destiny as a musician entrusted with the history of a people. Badjé’s father, Mody Tounkara, was one of the managers of the Instrumental Ensemble of Mali, a highly reputed 28-man troupe formed straight after the country’s independence at the wish of President Modibo Keita. The Ensemble’s role was to safeguard and foster the traditions of the country’s different ethnic groups, with the aim of promoting national identity to the people, and extending its cultural influence further afield.
¶ Badjé’s practical and theoretical knowledge have ensured his reputation as a respected ngonifula (ngoni player) whose talents have been put to use by numerous artists over the last three decades. They include figures of the griot movement, like Kandia Kouyaté, Amy Koïta and Mah Damba, as well as more cross-cutting projects, like playing alongside his brilliant compatriot Sorry Bamba, or in the company of Français Seb Martel and the Anglo-Italian Piers Faccini, both on stage and in the studio.
¶ With this second album, Sodjan, which comes nine years after N’goni solo, Badjé moves closer to joining his two worlds, keeping his feet firmly planted in strong traditional inspiration, but with his head turned towards horizons new – although with less audacity than the master of the art, Bassekou Kouyate. The strings of the three ngonis (solo, bass and accompaniment) blend together along with a light touch of percussion.
¶ The blues permeate the album, especially when Badjé adds his voice to A Yé Wili. He invites guests to sing on some of the other tracks, including Adama Diabaté, with whom he performed back in 1994 at the Africolor Festival near Paris. Three of the ten tracks are instrumental, and the alternation works well thanks to a careful treatment of the sound that gives shape and space to the notes liberated from the ngonis’ strings.

¶ Mali's Makan Badje Tounkara is a gifted composer, arranger, singer, and n'goni soloist. Makan is joined by bass n'goni, djembe drum, tama drum, fle gourd, krin scraper, and several vocalists. Nana Coulibaly, Gedon Diara, Adama Diabate, Fatoumata Kouyate, Modi Tounkara, Yakouba Sissoko, Djifili, Modibo Diabate, and Mamadou Tounkara round out the personnel. The lilting strings and plucked lutes combine with light percussion and energetic vocals to produce a very organic result. The n'goni is the star of the album. Having been popularized by Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba, the n'goni is a charming little instrument with aural sound qualities and raw outcome. The melodies are slightly blues-tinged, but Afro-folk melodies are the main concern here. There are a few wholly instrumental tunes, but vocals are presented on almost every track. Fans of Malian folk music should not leave this one behind. ~ Matthew Forss

¶ Sodjan est le fruit de neuf années de collaboration avec les plus grands artistes du Mali. Badjé Tounkara propose une balade entre tradition mandingue et blues, portée par de grandes griottes du Mali telles que Nana Coulibaly et Djéliny Kouyaté… Il livre au monde une réécriture de l’Art des griots dans une poésie en perpétuel mouvement entre Afrique et Occident. Les Djéli’n'Gonis (guitares traditionnelles des griots au Mali), les calebasses et tamanis (Tambours d’aisselles) tracent, à l’intérieur d’un répertoire résolument ancré au cœur des musiques traditionnelles, un sillon nouveau inspiré du blues, des musiques du désert dans une métaphore au voyage. Sodjan qui signifie en bambara le grand cheval, est un clin d’œil à l’Histoire Africaine, mais également sur le lien qui unit le cavalier à son destrier, le griot à la société moderne, le temps à l’humanité.

¶ Le griot Makan (dit Badjé) Tounkara est né en 1965 non loin de Bamako. Son éducation musicale, c’est son père Mody Tounkara qui la lui a enseignée. Ce fameux joueur de n’goni, le directeur-adjoint de « l’Ensemble Instrumental du Mali», lui a mis cette petite guitare traditionnelle entre les mains dès qu’il a pu faire sonner les cordes. ¶ Un enseignement strict, divulgué au détriment de la scolarité de Badié, puisque son père considérait comme plus important pour un griot d’apprendre à connaître tout le répertoire par cœur que de savoir lire.Badié a donc accompagné dès quinze ans la jeune Adja Soumano, puis il a régulièrement joué avec Amy Koïta. En 1985 il décide d’ajouter trois cordes à son instrument, une pour les basses et deux dans les aigus et le nomme de N’Goni Djuru woolfila.
¶ Badjé Makan Tounkara est le petit fils du grand Djeli Baba Sissoko et descendant de l'illustre famille de griot "Tounkara". Il a parcouru le monde aux côtés des plus grands de la musique mandinue (Salif Keïta, Baaba Maal, Toumani Diabate , Sekouba Bambino , Ami Koïta, Tata Bambo, Kandia Kouyaté ) avant de s'installer en France en 2000. Il sort un premier album solo "N'goni solo" en 2001, soutenu par l'Autre distribution, Les cinq planète et Mondomix. Il nous revient 10 ans plus tard, avec un nouvel album dont la sortie est prévu en janvier 2012 avec Buda Musique. La sortie de l'album s'annonce soutenue par la presse.
¶ Lors des concerts Badjé est accompagné de sa femme Djéliny Kouyaté, grande griotte malienne à la voix suave et imposante. Elle a commencé à apprendre le chant auprès de sa grand-mère, avant de se produire régulièrement sur les scènes de la capitale. Djéliny Kouyaté a collaboré avec les plus grandes chanteuses comme Adja Souman ou Amy Koïta, avant de rejoindre la France en 2008. Sa voix grave, son timbre chaleureux et étrange, envoute le public et nous plonge dans un voyage entre le silence et la douceur. Sa prestance scénique, sa connaissance à la fois de la tradition malienne et des paradoxes du griotisme moderne, la place directement dans la catégorie des grandes nouvelles voix du Mali, douce et chargée du sens de l’Histoire et des mots.
Sa musique est poétique, posée, épurée et puise ses inspirations dans un blues mandingue aux accents du désert. Les concerts ont de très bons retours et envoutent les publics dans un voyage entre silence du désert, douceur et découverte.
