Mary and the Pigeons — Into Air (March 2016)
♣ Mary and The Pigeons are a band hatched by writer and cellist Mary Barnecutt (me) with the aid of my lovely, assorted instrumental friends. Into Air combines my interest in folk music, poetry and an acoustic, minimalist string sound.
♣ ‘like Robert Wyatt crossed with... Mary Poppins.’ — Cellist and writer Mary Barnecutt’s debut album is a mesmeric mix of haunting melodies, pensive lyrics and panoramic string arrangements.
♣ ‘It’s like chamber folk’ — Kaleidescope’s Lioba Petrie
♣ ‘All of her music sounds like someone walking around a haunted house. With big boots on.’ — Declan Cusack

Album notes:
♣ Variously described as ‘acoustic chamber–folk’, ‘Robert Wyatt crossed with Mary Poppins’ and ‘like someone walking around a haunted house’, Mary and the Pigeons were recently hatched by songwriter/cellist Mary Barnecutt, whose background in classical music and creative writing provides her with a unique take on contemporary song.
♣ Driven by free–spirited lyrics and sophisticated instrumental arrangements, Into Air encompasses 9 unique soundworlds from the lush string arrangements of ‘Elephant’ and ‘Stranger Than’, to the sparse, Brahms Guitar accompaniment of the haunting vocal in ‘Guest’.
♣ This debut album features playing from some of Ireland’s top musicians including Redmond O’Toole, Adrian Crowley and Shelly Buckspan.
