ψ Very rarely do you come across an artist as wholly unique and singular as Matana Roberts. Her ongoing COIN COIN project is a constant bevy of exciting and fresh ideas of how to push what we might consider “music”. The latest upcoming installment of this series; ‘COIN COIN Chapter Three: River Run Thee’ takes things to a pensive, tension filled space and may be her most experimental entry yet.
ψ Recorded in Montreal at Hotel2Tango Studios, and working again with Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Jerusalem in My Heart), Roberts’ performed and recorded the album alone, a first for the releases in the COIN COIN series. To achieve the atmosphere and narrative of this release, overdubs were added during full play–throughs of the albums tapes, instead of isolated sessions of each track, imbuing a sense of structure as well as improvisation. The result is a stream of conscious trek, through a musical landscape Roberts’ likens to “a fever dream”.
ψ Assembled from field recordings, loop and effects pedals, Roberts’ saxophone, and ornamented with bits of spoken word and monastic–like vocals, this single uninterrupted soundscape is a haunting affair. Lulling you into a bit of a trance, the listening experience is not exactly what you’d call “relaxing”. Rather an ever present tension keeps you ears trained to the speakers, at the ready for the sudden shifts in texture and melody.
ψ This release drops February 3, 2015 on CD and 180 gram vinyl with Canadian label Constellation Records. Currently, Roberts’ has taken residence on a houseboat in Brooklyn, and has created a new blog as a “digital ship log” to reflect on and present new ideas that further the themes of the newest chapter in her idiosyncratic series. :: http://soundcolourvibration.com/
ψ Matana Roberts is one of the most acclaimed, socio–politically conscious and aesthetically intrepid avant–jazz practitioners of the 21st century. The critical accolades for her multi–chapter Coin Coin work place her at the vanguard of stylistic innovation and radicalization, while confirming the deep substance and soul that guides her compositional agenda. Roberts has long employed the phrase “panoramic sound quilting” to describe Coin Coin, and with this third chapter in the series she implements this metaphor most overtly.
ψ “...isn’t just mildly curious to expand her medium: she seems driven to do it.” — (New York Times)
ψ “...Matana Roberts does not make easy listening music.” — (Los Angeles Times)
Solo / as band leader:
ψ Lines for Lacy (2006, self–release)
ψ The Calling (2007, Utech Records)
ψ The Chicago Project (2008, Central Control)
ψ Live in London (2011, Central Control)
ψ COIN COIN Chapter One: Gens de couleur libres (2011, Constellation Records)
