 My Brightest Diamond — A Million and One (Nov. 23rd, 2018) •  Dne 3. března 2016 legálně změnila své příjmení na Nova! Během posledních dvou let zažila obrovské změny ve svém životě a chtěla, aby jméno odráželo transformaci a jméno znamenalo světlo a znovuzrození. Má novou nádhernou kytaru, kterou jí vyrobil jedinečný Luke Jackson z Huron Guitars. A Million And One je další kapitola cesty Shary Nova jako songwriterky, skladatelky a aranžérky. Za posledních 12 let spolupracovala a hrála s dlouhým seznamem talentovaných umělců a tvůrců včetně Sufjan Stevense, Laurie Anderson, The Decemberists... (+ David Byrne & Fatboy Slim, Sarah Kirkland Snider a Matthew Barney. Právě tento týden byla oznámena jako jedna ze čtyř kreativních budoucích spolupracovníků Carolina Performing Arts Creative Future Fellows a je recipientem Kresge Fellow, Knights Grant United States Artists fellow. Sestavila skladby pro soubory: YMusic, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Young New Yorkers’ Chorus, Brooklyn Rider, Nadia Sirota a Roomful of Teeth a vystoupila v Carnegie Hall, Metropolitan Museum of Art a Kennedy Centru. Pro album „A Million and One“ napsala více než padesát písní, které nakonec zúžila do počtu deseti.
•  „It’s Me On The Dance Floor“. Album začíná impozantně. Vstupuje do alba zvukem kláves jak od Johna Medeskiho, následuje jediný výkřik a hra kapely začíná. Jako předehra pracuje na svém základním odmítnutí tančit v electro hit s vlastnostmi tanečního parketu. Kytary a tlumený hlas přetváří předpokládaný zásah do něčeho hlubšího, i přes konstantní tón.
•  „Rising Star“ začíná hlasy z davu, následuje střih. Začíná příběh. S těžce podsaditými, bombastickými, syntetickými basy, rytmicky složitými perkusemi. Backgroundový sbor svými hlasy podpírá melodiku písně. V pozadí je opět linka, podobná Manfred Mannovu vibrujícímu moogu. Hlas Shary je střídavě drsný a jemně naléhavý, pak vysoký a dominantní. Za ním synthie~bass vše podpírá jako páteř.
•  „Champagne“ láká téměř minutu s napjatým techno zázemím, dokud nezačne první beat. Ponechte to úsporné, dokud nezačne technoid po půl minutě.
•  „You Wanna See My Teeth“ začíná jako techno. Všemu však dominuje několik stop hlasů, kytar s třpytem elektronických space zvuků. Rod Argent, Hawkwind, Nektar, několik dalších archetypů vás napadne taky.
•  Shara nezakrývá, že vyrůstala v Ypsilanti v Michiganu, poslouchala gospel, jazz, klasickou hudbu a hrála v kostele. I zde mixuje elementy opery, kabaretu, chamber music a rocku.
•  „Mother“ je tmavá a ponurá. Sbor se stává podprahovým náušníkem. Vše nasvědčuje tomu, že jsme v Dukelském průsmyku, kde masakr právě vrcholí.
•  „White Noise“ začínají opět tranzistorové hlasy a odpovědí syntetizátory. Nakonec se přidají syntetické basy a baskytary s latentními hlukovými stopami.
•  Rozmanitost je principem zvukového designu v portfoliu My Brightest Diamond. Limity se stále zkoumají. Změny nálad během několika sekund. Láskyplně harmonický, motivovatelný, dramaticky opotřebovaný, hrozivě ohrožující postup vojsk Shary Nova překonává poslední překážky. Pěkná koupelna s podlahou plnou nášlapných min nutí přemýšlet o každém kroku. Proto ty intervaly. Pro změnu dobrá nálada převládá.
•  I přes nesporný hudební vývoj, ne~li rozeznatelnou proměnu, zůstává věrná svým základům. Její svět je objemný a zároveň chytlavý, mísí elektroniku s analogovými nástroji. Taneční pop se setkává s avantgardou. Folk naplňuje atributy a předpoklady alternativy. Obrovská šířka pásma hlasu Shary Nova vždy dominuje.

✹  A Million and One review — chilly art pop that grasps for greatness.

✹  The single opens with an eerie organ section and a steady, programmed kick drum pulse. “I’m all alone, turn the lights low,” Nova croons over fragmented backing vocals. “Maybe it’s me, it’s me I’m looking for/ It’s me, it’s me on the dance floor,” she sings, as the song blooms into a jerky, syncopated chorus with palm~muted electric guitars.
✹  Nova recorded A Million and One with producer Anthony “The Twilite Zone” Khan (Gorillaz, Kanye West) and engineer Andrew Scheps (Adele, Lana Del Rey). In a statement about the record, which follows 2014’s This Is My Hand, she explored the track’s themes of physicality and inward searching.
✹  “What’s my relationship to my body like, without respect to how someone else perceives it?” she mused. “I wanted to write a dance song that wasn’t about hooking up with someone, or looking outside myself for something, but about finding myself through movement, exploring my own body. Sometimes I will go to a club and don’t want to be distracted by everyone else’s energy, but I want to dance hard, so I face the wall, playing with what shadows I can create, not caring if other people watch, or don’t watch. How hard can I push myself until my body is completely exhausted on the dance floor and then in the exhausted state; how can I find other kinds of movements?”
✹  Nova — who lived outside of Detroit, Michigan as a teenager and returned to the city in 2008 — crafted A Million and One partly as a tribute to Detroit and its influence on her formative years. “The album examines the quest for my individuality and the search for a deeper relationship to my body, my neighbors and to the planet,” she said.

✹  The turn towards electronic music that Shara Nova took on the 2014 album This Is My Hand continues on her fifth full~length album as My Brightest Diamond. It is not really an album for the clubs, though, despite the title of the opening track, That’s Me on the Dance Floor. (The presence of chicken~scratch guitar does not a Chic record make.) Instead, Nova once again offers art pop that is best when it’s less concerned with the art than the pop. For instance, on the gorgeously sad Another Chance, the claimed influence of Anita Baker comes through in a ballad that combines regret and hope.
✹  But there’s surely a reason why Nova has worked with so many fantastic artists — Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Sufjan Stevens and the Decemberists among them — without exactly establishing herself at their level.
✹  There’s a certain chilliness to A Million and One, an album that seems on the verge of becoming terrific without ever quite getting there. The percussively driven You Wanna See My Teeth and Sway shift the emphasis away from melody, but they don’t have the drama to carry the weight being asked of them at the centre of the album. It’s one that never sounds as if it wants you to relax, but neither does it ratchet up the tension enough. It falls betwixt and between.
