Pretenders — Last of The Independents
♦♦♦ Christine Ellen "Chrissie" Hynde (born September 7, 1951) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician best known as the lead singer of the rock band The Pretenders. She has been the only constant member of the band throughout its history. She has also released a number of collaborations with other musicians — two of which reached No.1 in the UK Charts.
♦♦♦ Hynde has a contralto vocal range. "She was amazing: the only woman I'd seen in performance where I thought, Yeah, she's got balls, she's awesome! . . . It gave me courage, inspiration, to see a woman with that kind of confidence in a man's world." — Madonna, Central Park in August 1980.

Reviews:
By Greg Kot | May 12, 1994 | Score: ***
♦♦♦ Although she's regarded in some quarters as the queen mom of the post–punk generation, Chrissie Hynde is no musical iconoclast. Rather, her art is rooted in tradition and "Last of the Independents" plunders the past: the Byrdsian jangle of "Night in My Veins," the Stones/Kinks riff that kicks off "Money Talk," the Lennon–meets–Spector balladry of "977," the blatant "Mystery Train" rewrite "Rebel Rock Me" and the reverent cover of "Forever Young." With the exception of an awful power ballad "I'll Stand By You," this is solid, if conventionally produced, classic rock. But Hynde's phrasing and double–edged lyricism are full of daring and insight. The moral vertigo of "Hollywood Perfume" and "Money Talk," the way a lover toys with her rings in "All My Dreams," the startling tale of codependence in "977," the moment of recognition in the otherwise lustful "Night in My Dreams" — Hynde's best songs still seduce and surprise.
