≡°≡   Scottish singer–songwriter Rachel Sermanni has been touring the world since she was just 17 years old, and has performed more than 500 shows since 2009.
≡°≡   It's a testament to her talent, wanderlust and road warrior ethic that Sermanni's new live album comes courtesy of a trek to Canada and a stop at last summer's 25th annual Dawson City Music Festival in the beautiful northern wilds of Yukon. The recording is break–your–heart–in–half beautiful, the kind of collection that can guide a listener from the heady fog of falling in love through the suspended animation of its bittersweet end.
≡°≡   You can stream the record starting today (it's available for preorder here and is released April 8) via the player above, and read on for a brief Q&A with the remarkably talented Sermanni.
≡°≡   What were your first impressions of Dawson? Had you ever been to northern Canada before?
≡°≡   Never been before. We got to see the birds–eye view of the Yukon first in a rickety little plane, kept together it seems with duct tape. We landed roughly and began laughing hysterically whilst a lady on the other side had a panic attack. We shut up when we realized she hadn't enjoyed it as much as we did.
≡°≡   As soon as we were out of the aircraft I was struck by the air and the vastness of everything wild. I thought it resembled where I'm from, the Cairngorms in the Highlands of Scotland, but it's like someone has passed a magnifying glass over everything. You feel as small as an ant.
≡°≡   You're 23 now, but you've played more than 500 shows around the world. What's the most critical piece of advice you'd pass on to other singer–songwriters venturing out at 17 years old?
≡°≡   Not quite 23, my birthday is November. I would say that playing so much is a good thing because it hones your performance and ages your voice. Travelling so far has also opened my mind. If you are a curious cat, like me, and you like your solitude, then it is fun and educational in the space between gigs. But my advice would also be that if you are touring for months then it takes just as long to rejuvenate. And rejuvenation is what you need to create things. So you need to find a balance.
≡°≡   You've shared the stage with some famous musicians. Who offered you the best advice and what was it?
≡°≡   Don Kerr, who drums for Ron Sexsmith, was very kind and encouraged me a lot with his words. He said that sleep is very important. You can do anything if you sleep. And he advised I try hot yoga. Thanks to this advice I'm now very fond of all sorts of yogic things.
