Description/Press:
—   On 7 March 2008 he issued his debut solo album, Scott Matthew, on Glitterhouse Records. Allmusic's reviewer, Pemberton Roach, described Matthew's "quivering, otherworldly" singing and his "gentle, melancholic" songwriting with the album displaying his "enigmatic voice and tales of existential woe gently supported by a bed of tinkling piano ('Surgery'), softly plucked ukulele ('Little Bird'), vibes ('Amputee'), and muted horns ('In the End')".
Review
—   Best known for his music’s inclusion on the soundtrack to the acclaimed Cameron Mitchell film SHORTBUS, Scott Matthew garnered attention throughout the indie world for his gentle, melancholic compositions and quivering, otherworldly vocals. His debut eponymous full-length showcases Matthew’s enigmatic voice and tales of existential woe gently supported by a bed of tinkling piano (“Surgery”), softly plucked ukulele (“Little Bird”), vibes (“Amputee”), and muted horns (“In the End”).
—   "Scott Matthew is a remarkably gifted Australian singer/songwriter based in NYC, blessed with an amazing voice of incredible power and emotive intensity (somewhere between Antony and Bowie). His debut album is purely magnetic, exposing the honesty, truth, beauty and sorrow central to human existence. Classical string arrangements are juxtaposed with minimalist ensembles of guitar, piano and ukulele supporting his exceptional, soulful voice."
Artist Biography by Margaret Reges
—   Graced with a melancholy, David Bowie-esque croon and a touch of theatricality in the vein of Antony and the Johnsons, alternative singer/songwriter Scott Matthew garnered some attention in the early 2000s thanks in large part to work on various high-profile soundtracks. Born in Australia, Matthew worked with a handful of bands before moving to Brooklyn, NY in the late '90s. He teamed up with Morrissey's former bandmate Spencer Cobrin to release an EP under the name Elva Snow in 2002. Following that, Matthew devoted his energy to working on various soundtrack projects, notably for Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell. Matthew's big break came in 2006, when four of his songs were prominently featured on the soundtrack of John Cameron Mitchell's award-winning film Shortbus. Those tracks, together with a passel of new songs, were included on Matthew's self-titled debut, which was released on the Defend Music label in 2008. Matthew's sophomore effort, the voluminously titled There Is an Ocean That Divides and With My Longing I Can Charge It with a Voltage That's So Violent to Cross It Could Mean Death hit stores in 2009.
