Biography
•• The onetime frontwoman for the acclaimed indie pop combo Crowsdell, singer/songwriter Shannon Wright was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. A product of the area’s thriving all~ages punk scene, she formed Crowsdell with bassist Paul Howell and drummer Laurie Anne Wall, debuting in 1995 with the underground favorite Dreamette and soon after relocating to New York City. However, when relations with the Big Cat label soured in the wake of 1997’s Within the Curve of an Arm, the group dissolved, and an embittered Wright sold most of her belongings and moved to rural North Carolina, where she began recording a series of deeply personal, folk~inflected songs to four~track. A handful of solo singles followed before she recorded the full~length Flightsafety, issued on Quarterstick in 1999. Maps of Tacit appeared a year later. Wright released the sparse mini~LP Perishable Goods and the typically eclectic Dyed in the Wool in 2001. In 2004 she put out the tempered and emotionally rich Over the Sun, followed by the equally affecting Let in the Light in 2007. After Wright’s longtime label Quarterstick/Touch & Go closed down operations, she pushed forward with new albums Honeybee Girls in 2009 and Secret Blood in 2010 as well as performances at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival curated by Shellac in 2012. In Film Sound, Wright’s first album for Brooklyn~based indie Ernest Jenning, saw release in 2013. ~ Jason Ankeny

À son origine un coup de cœur, celui de la musicienne française Katia Labèque (pianiste mondialement reconnue, avec sa soeur Marielle), qui approche Shannon Wright à un concert de cette dernière. Le plus beau vu depuis de nombreuses années, selon ses mots. La rencontre et les compliments du soir ne restent pas sans suite, puisqu’elle invite l’américaine à venir enregistrer dans son studio à Rome. Shannon Wright profite d’une tournée italienne pour s’y rendre, incertaine de tout résultat. Elle y écrit finalement trois chansons en deux jours, fortement inspirée par l’atmosphère du studio et ses superbes pianos.
• Suivent plusieurs mois de travail intense avec le musicien / producteur / ingénieur du son David Chalmin, entre Rome et Paris (aussi à distance depuis les Etats~Unis), pour restituer le plus fidèlement possible les nouvelles sonorités qui hantent l’esprit de la songwriteuse d’Atlanta. Shannon Wright écrit, compose et joue la quasi~totalité des parties (y compris certaines batteries, d’autres sont interprétées par l’excellent batteur Raphaël Séguinier), avec le talent et la singularité qui ont fait sa réputation internationale.
