Siobhan Wilson — The Departure (10 May, 2019)  ¬♣→    Neustále podmanivý zážitek bohatý na zvuk i ducha. „Jsem ve věku, kdy se některé z mých kamarádek zajímají: Kdy mi to navrhne? Co si o tom myslí?“, řekla Siobhan Wilson, když se zabývala podklady pro píseň „Marry Me“, prvním singlem ze svého nového alba The Departure. „Napsala jsem píseň, která je jako: navrhněte mu to, můžete to udělat Nyní.“ To byla píseň, která zasáhla téma ženského zmocnění situace v dnešní společnosti a v průběhu jedenácti písní je na paškálu hned VELKÉ TÉMA — a konkrétněji téma identity — dále zkoumáno, často až s úžasným účinkem. „The Departure“, samostatná skladbička, je ve své chladné subtilnosti lákavě svůdná a téměř chorální. Téměř pohodlně sedí v poloze „50 Words For Snow“ od Kate Bush, kromě toho, že za peníze někoho jiného, prakticky všechno ostatní na tomto albu si přivlastnila, co vůbec bylo možné na nejnovější studiovce z Bexleyheath. Slova „expanzivní“ a „podmanivá“ již byla vyřčena předtím. Ale není to bez dobrého důvodu, protože Wilson tato dvě slova dokonale zapouzdřila, má také mnohem větší hloubku než většina jejích současnic právě teď, jak jasně dokazuje naprosto kouzelná a snová „Little Hawk“, která vyzní, jako kdybyste seděli na okraji útesu očekávajíc bouřku, odváděli svou mysl od všech úzkostí, kterými právě teď trpíte a dávali prostor myšlenkám z úplně jiného světa. Krásně vybrnkávaná „Stars Are Nonzero“ pokračuje v iluzorní cestě, ducha hladící číslo, které neznělo na začátku padesátých let, přesto ... v jejích rukou to není nic jiného než twee. Aby jsme si rozuměli: něco, co je tak sladké, až vám je z toho špatně. Jako hanlivě popisné slůvko znamená něco, co je lahůdkové, pamlsek, mls a tak malebné, že je až příliš sentimentální. Pamatujete? O Belle and Sebastian se kdysi psalo, že jsou jako „The Beatles of twee“. Ale jinak docela pozoruhodné album. 円   ‘Reinvent whatever you want / Or be as simple as you want’. As Siobhan Wilson declares this on the delicate, string~swept ‘April’, she airs a liberating narrative, one where she encourages taking control of your own destiny. Following the acclaim of 2017’s There Are No Saints, Wilson herself continues to forge a path all her own. Raising funds through Kickstarter and releasing on her own Suffering Fools Records, The Departure encourages the listener to throw off the weight of expectation.
円   The freedom Wilson expresses is laced across the sonic expansion of the record, which often takes a darker tone. ‘Unconquerable’ propels itself on a scuzzy melody as Wilson and Honeyblood’s Stina Tweeddale exchange lines; together, they challenge unrealistic expectations placed on women by asking ‘are we forever to tread the line between being human and being divine?’ While initially revelling in small details, scuzzy rock stomp All Dressed Up Tonight (Better Than I Ever Did With You) sees Wilson defiantly declaring ‘if I was your girl, I would set myself free’.
円   Alongside these more strident melodies are passages of hushed yet undeniable beauty, from the twinkling cover of French singer Barbara’s Dis, Quand Reviendras — Tu? to the haunted, finger~plucked soundscape of Stars Are Nonzero. Even in these moments, Wilson’s messages retain their power, not least on the sweeping Little Hawk, which builds into a heady squall and sees Wilson declaring: ‘I burst out ’cause I’m wilder and richer than you had foreseen’.
円   With The Departure, Wilson has indeed crafted a constantly captivating experience that’s rich in both sound and spirit.
