Sports Team — Deep Down Happy (5 Jun 2020)  ℜ♦♥   Sports Team je ta nejbláznivější nová parta s drzými ambicemi a vysokými očekáváními. Tato šestičlenná kapela provdala britpopovou senzibilitu s americkým alt~rock soundem. Zapomněl jsem: s debutovým albem plným hédonismu, tribalismu a nezkrotné energie. Těchto 12 skladeb je zuřivá, vtipná vlajka v zemi od kapely, která nemá absolutně žádnou páru a tím jakoby vykoštěná o tom, kým je. „Chci být právníkem nebo někým, kdo loví lišky,“ zní v otvíráku „Lander“. A tím zviditelnili seznam nemoderních britských měst střední třídy, z nichž pocházejí. Na nedávném singlu „Here’s The Thing“ mají podobu konzervativní postavy, která rozkládá jeho vadný manifest, než jej označí: „lži, lži, lži“.
„Každý si myslí, že musíte jednat jako utiskovaná kapela,“ řekl frontman Alex Rice minulý rok NME, když se zabýval kritikou, kterou kapela obdržela za to, že nosí na svých rukávech středoškolskou výchovu a privilegium. V kapele Sports Team albem „Deep Down Happy“ přijímají a uznávají tato nepopiratelná fakta a zároveň se ostře a pronikavě vymezují vůči těm, kteří vyrostli mezi nimi, a bylo jim řečeno, že vypadají a zní „jako“, a katarticky je proměňují, či obracejí v karikatury a postavy zesměšňování. Znáte Knebworth House? Pink Floyd, Captain Beefheart, Linda Lewis, Monty Python, Steve Miller Band, Roy Harper tam hráli 6. července 1975. The Rolling Stones spolu s 10cc, Hot Tuna, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Don Harrison Band a Todd Rundgrenem 21. srpna 1976. A teď: Sports Team. Frontman řekl, že... „děláme hudbu pro sebe — a pokud nás má rád někdo jiný, tak to je bonus.“ 
ℜ♦♥   Lidé budou mít na svědomí své svazky alb a hlučně zpívat ke každé divoké satirické lyrice, kterou Deep Down Happy nabízí. Zdá se být vhodné, že kapela, která si užila tak rychlý růst popularity a rychle zdomácněla na britské scéně, by měla využít své debutové album jako příležitost k zamyšlení nad svými ranými úspěchy. Takže, když se to scvrkne, opravdu záleží na tom, že většinu tohoto alba již bylo slyšet? Spíš ne.

ℜ♦♥   Sports Team are a band with brazen ambition and high expectations.
ℜ♦♥   Rocketing from a promising breakthrough to becoming one of the most thrilling acts on the current live circuit with notoriously incendiary shows, they’ve ascended to cult~like status with just two EPs. Fashionably late, debut album Deep Down Happy arrives into the hands of salivating indie kids in all corners of suburbia.
ℜ♦♥   Sharing a house in Camberwell after meeting at Cambridge, the six~piece are rooted in community. Sharing a less than conventional relationship with their fans via Whatsapp groups and Instagram meme pages, it’s safe to say they know exactly what their audience want and deliver it tenfold. Combining the spirit of Britpop with the attitude of modern day post punk, tracks like “Going Soft” , “Here It Comes Again” and the familiar cries of “Camel Crew” and “Kutcher”, swell, expand and know just when to pull the pin into an eruption of chaos.
ℜ♦♥   Though we’re used to flamboyant frontman Alex Rice mouthing off by now, it’s a refreshing twist to hear guitarist and chief songwriter Rob Knaggs’ vocals peppered throughout the record. On opener “Lander” (headphone warning) he lends his voice to kick and scream about packing lunches, hunting foxes, and a shit Slug and Lettuce.
ℜ♦♥   Stand out tracks “Here’s The Thing” and “The Races”, are superb displays of wit and sardonicism. “He’ll never buy a drink but he’ll let you know he can” and proclamations of how “It’s all just lies, lies, lies”, all soundtracked to galloping guitar lines and propulsive rhythms. A middle finger to Conservative Britain; one part gammon faced Leaver and one part Thursday night Broadgate Circle thirty year old reeking of Dior Sauvage.
ℜ♦♥   Bookended by the phrase “You can always go to London”, whether it’s doing drugs or finding love, Deep Down Happy expresses those smalltown suffocations and inequalities paired with massive choruses and the pithiest of lyrics. In light of the current situation, the record’s delayed release actually works in its favour, allowing us to look inward and discover what really makes us Deep Down Happy — whether that be sourdough starters or listening to one of Britain’s brightest guitar bands.
ℜ♦♥   “This ship is unsinkable,” cries Rice on “The Races” — you sure got that right.
