Editorial Reviews
•χ•   Stranger Cat is the new project from Cat Martino, Sufjan Stevens’ right hand woman for the Age of Adz tour and record, as well as All Delighted People. Cat was also a recording and touring member of Sharon Van Etten’s band circa Epic. She appeared with The Shins on SNL and Williamsburg Park, played in Passion Pit at Governor's Ball, and sings on the Son Lux record Lanterns.
•χ•   Cat retreated from Brooklyn, NY to winter in the Sierra Foothills to write and record songs emerging from loops using her voice, synths, and percussion. With her pedal chain and gear in a small cottage she explored the gamut from ethereal to turbulence. Simple melodies or beats became powerful walls of sound melting through snowstorms, howling winds and stark silence nestled inside gargantuan oaks and the infinite starry dome.
•χ•   Joined by Sven Britt for a week, each of them traded making beats, or melodic parts on casios, synths, guitars, branches and spoons, while the other recorded. Out of this adventure was born "In The Wilderness", the duo’s debut full–length out April 14th on Joyful Noise Recordings.
STRANGER CAT Livesss...
•χ•   Raised in the urban sprawl, Stranger Cat — a musical project from Cat Martino — was born out of a respite in the wilderness. As most stories go, she was seeking a noiseless place for musing, but found instead a sentient beast stalking through the woods, be it animal, alien, or deity; she memorized its sound.
•χ•   Though it’s possible you can’t place her name, if you’ve been paying attention to independent music over the past several years you have almost certainly heard Cat Martino’s voice. The Brooklyn native was Sufjan Stevens’ right hand woman for Age of Adz and All Delighted People albums and world tour, recorded/toured with Sharon Van Etten circa Epic, she sings on the new Son Lux record Lanterns, appeared with The Shins on SNL and Williamsburg Park. She has opened tours in US or EU for Marissa Nadler, Indians, Night Beds, Rufus Wainwright, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Patrick Watson, Gardens and Villa and more.
•χ•   In 2012, Cat retreated from Brooklyn to spend the winter in the Sierra Foothills, writing and recording new songs. In snowed–in seclusion, simple melodies or beats morphed into walls of sound, sequenced in patterns of many–layered complexity.
•χ•   Joined by partner in crime and multi–instrumentalist Sven Britt, each of them recorded and produced each other to make the Stranger Cat songs grow.
•χ•   Often a cat would come to the sliding glass door to listen, meowing to be let in. •χ•   When it appeared daily they called it Stranger Cat, and observed its alien supernatural powers, as she’d heard tell of the Foothills’ long history of UFO sightings and ghost haunts. One day they let Stranger Cat in. The plump feline ate all the kitty food and left.
•χ•   For live shows, Cat & Sven concoct a mesmerizing set of sound, much bigger than just their duo. They stand out by creating an aurally and visually vivid and energetic performance, making live loops onstage using voice, synths, and drum machines, while playing guitars, and various other instruments and pedals. All of this is to serve the song — dark, sexy, soulful, playful and dream–like — that might just make you let yourself go and dance a little bit.
Description:
•χ•   Born in the claustrophobic chaos of Brooklyn, NY, Stranger Cat — an electronic pop project from Cat Martino and co–producer/multi–instrumentalist Sven Britt — came to be through a dark time and a respite in the wilderness, both of which ultimately led to a personal and musical rebirth. Stranger Cat developed out of a congenital collaborative partnership between Martino and Britt, resulting in their debut full–length In The Wilderness.
•χ•   If you’ve been paying attention to independent music over the past several years, you have almost certainly heard Cat Martino’s voice. The Brooklyn native was Sufjan Stevens’ right hand woman for Age of Adz and All Delighted People albums and world tours, recorded and toured with Sharon Van Etten circa Epic, sang on Son Lux’s Lanterns, and appeared with The Shins on Saturday Night Live. She has also opened tours for Marissa Nadler, Indians, Rufus Wainwright, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Mark Gardener (of Ride), Gardens and Villa and more.
•χ•   The songs maintain an unmistakably poppy sensibility throughout the record, but there’s a dark personal tale lurking beneath the polish. In the summer of 2012, a breakup with her longtime boyfriend/co–producer — coupled with a flare–up of a once–healed neuromuscular illness — left her feeling dejected and utterly isolated, and she fell into a deep depression. In need of a break from the ever–present tension of New York City, Cat retreated to the Sierra Foothills to record the songs that would become In The Wilderness.
•χ•   When she returned to New York, Cat brought some of her friends into the studio — as a result, In The Wilderness features guest appearances from Sufjan Stevens, Christopher Powell (Man Man), Darby Cicci (The Antlers) and Reggie Pace (Bon Iver), among others.
•χ•   Instead of playing into the platitude of the bleary–eyed breakup piece, Into The Wilderness subverts that notion by blending shimmering synths, sparse and skittering beats, lush vocal loops and omnichord with Cat’s strikingly soulful vocals. It would be tempting to file the record under “ethereal pop” on first pass, but when factoring in the trip–hop beats, blaring trombones and piano runs, categorization gets a bit more complicated. :: https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/
