In the past I’ve had the chance to collaborate with many great musicians, such as Do Make Say Think, Broken Social Scene, Absolutely Free and toured with bands like Oasis and Feist. ♦   Ontario singer/songwriter Tamara Williamson's stunning new album, "Sister Daughter Mother Wife," is a testament to lyrical depth, musical power and the intimacy of compelling vocals. Williamson states “The importance of this album is paramount for me as it helped me work through some of the tougher ideas I've faced and helped me start living outside of the bubble I had created for myself. Every song on the album explores a different women's story that I felt needed to be heard.” This is the best album of the year so far for us. An absolute must have.

♦   Earlier projects like Mrs Torrance, Microbunny and King Cobb Steelie have brought Tamara Williamson strong peer respect, but she has deserved wider attention for her powerful and poetic solo work. Hopefully that may now come via new (eighth solo) record Sister Mother Daughter Wife. Williamson explains that “every song on the album explores a different women's story that I felt needed to be heard”, and she gives voice to these stories in highly eloquent and emotionally intense ways. ♦   Her voice has the purity and passion of Sinead O'Connor, and she is a fine lyricist too. An A–list of accompanying players here comprises Morgan Doctor, Mitchell Girio (who mixed and mastered too), Ken Myhr, Kevin Fox and Richard Weisdorf. Her recent collaboration with Absolutely Free, "The Next One", is reprised here in rawer form as "Who's Next". This is riveting, important and timely stuff.
♦   She plays at The Thomas Foster Memorial in Uxbridge on Aug. 7. Let's hope for more performances soon.

♦   A veteran of the Toronto music scene, Tamara Williamson is prepping her eighth solo album Sister Mother Daughter Wife, and Exclaim.ca is pleased to premiere the first single "Victoria."
♦   She's collaborated with the Rheostatics, Do Make Say Think, Broken Social Scene and Absolutely Free; toured with Jewel, Oasis and Feist; and produced records for Rachel Smith and Barzin. But the forthcoming albums sees Williamson pursuing her own music once again.
♦   That doesn't mean that others didn't influence the new material, though. Each song on Sister Mother Daughter Wife was inspired by a different woman with her own unique story.
♦   Lead single "Victoria" was spawned from a story she heard on the radio.
♦   “One morning in 2013 I was driving my son to school listening to The Current on CBC,” she explained in a statement. “I was pulled into a story about a woman from Argentina named Victoria Montenegro. At the age of 20, Victoria found out that the parents who had raised her were not her family and had been responsible for her abduction as a baby. After many years of searching Victoria found that her father had been a victim of the ‘death flights’ where thousands of young Argentinian citizen's were thrown alive from planes into the Atlantic Ocean. Her mothers body has never been recovered.”
♦   With such a powerful origin story, it's no surprise that the song itself is a solemn, emotive number. Thumping percussion and Williamson's gorgeous voice propel the track through both sad and hopeful moments.

♦   British native Tamara Williamson moved to Canada over a decade ago and after working her way through numerous Toronto acts, branched off into a solo career in 1997 with Nightmare on Queen Street, a lo–fi gem that secured her a prominent role in the Toronto scene, followed by key collaborations with King Cobb Steelie and Do Make Say Think. All Those Racing Horses finds Williamson surpassing the enormous promise of Queen Street and her two subsequent releases, Unconscious Pilot and In the Arms of Ed, her songwriting finally able to catch up and perfectly showcase her tremendous voice. The superficial points of comparison remain easily identifiable as her vocal mannerisms are reminiscent of Beth Orton, though also at times sound eerily similar to Chan Marshall, like on the mesmeric "August,” Lisa Germano on "Houses,” Kristin Hersh on "The News” and even Björk in her haunting background work on "The King.” Lyrically, it follows far more in the vein of Hersh’s literary savvy storytelling than Orton’s poetic muses. The intimate production, also taken on admirably by Tamara, sets the 13 songs in a uniformly stark and mellow cast, really only picking up tempo for her incredible cover of Karl Wallinger’s "Love Street.” Racing Horses is a captivating listen from front to back without any significant nadirs, a lovely winter album from a gifted songwriter clearly able to embrace the season’s introspective and secluding beauty. ♠ http://exclaim.ca/
