The Album Leaf Between Waves [Deluxe Version]

The Album Leaf — Between Waves [Deluxe Version] (August 26th, 2016)

The Album Leaf — Between Waves [Deluxe Version] The Album Leaf — Between Waves [Deluxe Version] (August 26th, 2016)⦿►   Nearly twenty years into a career that has seen Jimmy LaValle exercising his creativity across the realms of film scoring, sound collage, and electronic / rock music, via instrumental and vocal~driven compositions alike, LaValle and THE ALBUM LEAF are poised to deliver yet another sonic triumph with 2016’s ‘Between Waves’. Born out of a thorough reinvention of LaValle’s creative process and approach, ‘Between Waves’ is THE ALBUM LEAF’s first proper full~length record in over six years and the first to be recorded and produced as a complete band, and was written with greater emphasis on the group dynamic. The album displays multifaceted, meticulous sound design, a keen ear for balancing disparate influences, and the strongest senses of dynamics, rhythm, and composition THE ALBUM LEAF has displayed to date. From the moody evolution of “Glimmering Lights” to the wistful trip~hop stylings of “New Soul” and beyond, ‘Between Waves’ is a gorgeous collection of euphoric melodies and emotionally charged, multi~instrumental driven soundscapes from the longstanding innovators. This is intelligent, beautifully composed music at its most inventive, most confident, and most impressive.
⦿►   The album was born out of a thorough reinvention of LaValle’s creative process and approach: Between Waves is THE ALBUM LEAF’s first full~length record to be recorded with the band’s current lineup, and was written with greater emphasis on the group dynamic (the album was also entirely recorded and produced by LaValle and the band). The album’s eight tracks were winnowed down from thirty, and it shows: each song is memorable and unique, all speaking in THE ALBUM LEAF’s singular voice while expressing themselves through a wide variety of different sounds and emotions.
⦿►   The band’s thorough, unified approach is evident on nearly every aspect of Between Waves: the album displays multifaceted, meticulous sound design, a keen ear for balancing disparate influences, and the strongest senses of dynamics, rhythm, and composition THE ALBUM LEAF has displayed to date. From the moody evolution of ‘Glimmering Lights’ to the wistful hip~hop stylings of ‘A New Soul’ and beyond, Between Waves is THE ALBUM LEAF at its most inventive, most confident, and most impressive.Fotka uživatele Ben Tais Amundssen.           © Matthew Resovich — Violin, Synths, Glockenspiel, and Vocals 1st from left

⦿►   Six years removed from the project’s last proper full~length A Chorus of Storytellers, Jimmy LaValle’s long~running the Album Leaf has announced that a new record is on the way. Titled Between Waves, the album is set to arrive this summer.
⦿►   Eight tracks in the length, Between Waves is the first record to be recorded with the project’s current lineup, born from a reinvention of band leader LaValle’s creative process and a newfound emphasis on the group dynamic. Narrowed down from 30 tracks to eight, the record was entirely recorded and produced by LaValle and the band, which now consists of LaValle, Matthew Resovich, Brad Lee and David LeBleu.
⦿►   LaValle has also announced the Album Leaf’s signing to Relapse Records, making Between Waves the project’s first effort for the label.
⦿►   “I’m very excited to release a new record and to be a part of the Relapse family,” LaValle said in a statement. “This record represents a new musical chapter for me and after making records as the the Album Leaf for nearly two decades, I welcome a fresh start with such an influential, veteran label.”

Review
AllMusic Review by Paul Simpson;  Score: ***½
⦿   Between Waves is the first major release by electronic post~rock mainstays the Album Leaf in the six years since their final Sub Pop album A Chorus of Storytellers. During that time, the group recorded a soundtrack (Torey’s Distraction, 2012) and an EP (Forward/Return, 2014), and leader Jimmy LaVelle collaborated with Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek on 2013’s Perils from the Sea. Between Waves is the group’s debut for Relapse Records, which might be surprising to some fans considering that the label is mainly associated with extreme metal, but it makes a little more sense when taking into account the presence of cinematic, synth~heavy artists like Steve Moore/Zombi and S U R V I V E on the label, as well as Nothing, who have more in common with shoegaze than metal. What’s more surprising than Relapse releasing music by the Album Leaf is the fact that Between Waves is their most pop~focused work yet. Only a few tracks have vocals, but these songs sound almost polished enough for radio, or perhaps some sort of teen drama movie or series. Even the instrumental numbers are far more focused and structured than anything the band has written before, lacking the experimental ambient drift of their earlier work. The rhythms are propulsive, seamlessly combining skittering IDM beats and chopped~up live drums; “Back to the Start” is particularly impressive, starting off with a Moroder~lite disco rhythm before adding tricky, shifting drums and eventually a wistful, starry~eyed melody played by keyboards and horns. The songs progress evenly and without force, typically starting out calm and gradually swelling up and becoming more ecstatic. It’s not uncommon for these songs to bloom into something celebratory during their second half, such as on the rippling, shimmering “Wandering Still.” Between Waves is easily the strongest, most inspired Album Leaf release in at least a decade.
