Them Are Us Too — Amends (June 29, 2018)
⦿⦿⦿ Band Them They We Too v oblasti kalifornského zálivu vytvořili přítelkyně Kennedy Ashlyn a Cash Askew v roce 2012 při školním setkání na University of California, Santa Cruz. Setkali se v kontextu spousty společných přátel, kteří se podíleli nejen na umění, ale i na autonomní organizaci DIY a soustředily se na to, aby působily jako kritičtí myslitelé a tuto kritiku světa rozvíjeli kolem sebe, od feministických / antikapitalistických, až po antirasistická hlediska. V té době se ve všech těchto aspektech obě učily a hodně měnily, ale vždycky o těchto věcech mluvily a byli na této cestě stále společně. Před studiem Askew strávila několik svých tvůrčích let v San Francisku a hrála v několika kapelách, ale většinu času strávila sólovou produkcí hudby doma, kde její rodiče — jeden z nich talentovaný kytarista — podporovali její tvůrčí snahy. Ashlyn vyrůstala v Davisu v Kalifornii, kde, ačkoli sama nebyla přímým účastníkem, se odehrávala aktivní hudební scéna a nacházela se tam i univerzitní rozhlasová stanice, což dohromady ukazovalo, že jsou přístupné místní komunitě. Před setkáním s Ashlyn na UCSC dosáhla Askew hranic svého vývoje jako sóloumělkyně, ale v Ashlyn našla tvůrčího partnera s komplementárním talentem. Společně vytvořili druh hudby, která v jejich bezprostředním prostředí neexistovala. I když v Santa Cruz našly svou podpůrnou komunitu, ukázalo se, že Them Are We Too se nemusí nutně vejít do malé kazajky a skupina se přestěhovala do dalších částí Kalifornie. Objevovala stále rostoucí okruh podobně zaměřených přátel a tvůrčích známých. Skupiny jako Wax Idols (Los Angeles) a Pale Dian z Austinu rozšířily jejich outfit~obleček i mimo jejich domovský stát. Rychlé přítelkyně, které oceňovaly stejnou hudbu a umění, zaznamenaly demáč a začaly hrát intimní a nezapomenutelné koncerty na west coast v Kalifornii. Rychle si získaly kultovní pověst, která se šířila ‘o mladých, nevinných a čerstvých vzpomínkách na ctihodný 80s dream pop a shoegaze sound’ a hlas Kennedy Ashlyn byl okamžitě porovnáván s Elizabeth Fraser, Kate Bush a Harriet Wheeler — zatímco podobně i kytara Cash Askew v kombinaci propracovaného kytarového třpytění, připomínající Robina Guthrie, Ronnyho Mooringse nebo Kevina Shieldse. Jejich hudba se stala povědomou, ale pořád byla jaksi nová, nostalgická a srdcervoucí, s jednoduchými a současně závážnými skladbami. Jakoby popřely svůj věk (obě pouze kolem 21y, když podepsaly s DAIS RECORDS) vydáním jednoho z nejvíce neuvěřitelného debutového alba roku 2014, “Remain”. Cash Askew zemřela tragicky v ohni skladiště spolu s dalšími 35ti lidmi v bouři Ghost Ship v Oaklandu v prosinci roku 2016 a zničehonic nám poslala vlnu a intenzivní pocit ztráty. Zatímco se Kennedy Ashlyn nakonec objevila jako sólová umělkyně prostřednictvím svého projektu SRSQ, byly zde nedokončené nahrávky a zvukové náčrty Them Are We Too. Ti mnozí blízcí od Kennedy a Cash si zasloužili k poslechu a pro občerstvení paměti dárek. Kennedy se vrátila do studia s producenty Joshua Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), Sunny Haire (Cash’s stepfather), Matia Simovich (INHALT) a Anya Dross (přítelkyně Cash), aby zfinalizovaly nedokončená dema a náčrtky + napsali nové skladby na počest Cash Askew. Výsledkem je “AMENDS”: album tragické krásy a hloubky, která se táhne na vnách emocí a bez nadsázky — inspiruje. Dle vlastních slovech Kennedy: “Amends je sbírka písní, která byla druhá od Them They Are Us Too. Toto vydání je změnou našeho katalogu. Poslední dárek naší rodině, přátelům a fanouškům, kteří nás za posledních 5 let podporovali. “Amends” je společné úsilí mezi TAUT a některými nejkrásnějšími přáteli a rodinou společnosti Cash, které vyvrcholí závěrečným “děkuji” a “sbohem”. Nic nebude nikdy kompenzovat tu ztrátu, ale protože se snažíme vše dát kus po kuse dohromady, čím je svět nyní a jaký je život teď, doufám, že tato nahrávka vám pomůže vyplnit mezery. A přispějte nám trochou míru.” •→ Album je vydáno na standardním černém vinylovém formátu, stejně jako limitní edice čirá/transparentní (100 kopií) a zelená (400 kopií) + kompaktní a digitální formáty.

Fast friends with an appreciation for the same music and art, they recorded a demo and began performing intimate and memorable gigs on the west coast. They quickly gained a cult following as word spread about their youthful, innocent, and fresh take on the revered 80s dream pop and shoegaze sound, and Kennedy Ashlyn’s voice was immediately compared to Elizabeth Fraser, Kate Bush, and Harriet Wheeler — while Cash Askew’s washes of intricate guitar felt akin to Robin Guthrie, Ronny Moorings, or Kevin Shields. Their music felt familiar but new, nostalgic, and heartbreaking, with songs delivered simply and earnestly. They betrayed their age (both only 21 when they signed to DAIS) by releasing one of the most incredible debut albums of 2014, “Remain”.
⦿⦿⦿ Tragically, Cash Askew passed away in the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland in December of 2016, sending a shockwave of loss through our community. While Kennedy Ashlyn would eventually emerge as a solo artist through her project SRSQ, there were unfinished Them Are Us Too recordings and demos that Kennedy and those close to Cash felt deserved be heard in her memory.
⦿⦿⦿ Kennedy returned to the studio with producer Joshua Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), Sunny Haire (Cash’s stepfather), Matia Simovich (INHALT), and Anya Dross (Cash’s girlfriend) to complete unfinished demos and sketches, write new compositions, and honor Cash Askew.

This release is an amendment to our catalogue cut short; a final gift to our family, friends, and fans who have supported us for the past 5 years. “Amends” is a collaborative effort between TAUT and some of Cash’s dearest friends and family, culminating in a final “thank you” and “goodbye.” Nothing will ever compensate for the loss of Cash, but as we struggle to put together the pieces of what the world is now, what life is now, I hope this record can help to fill in the gaps. And give us some amount of peace.”
