♠»   Existuje 992 alb, majících ve svém názvu výraz Transmission Impossible nebo alespoň jedno z těchto slov. V říjnu 1975 se Tom Waits ‘přestěhoval’ do Tropicana Motel na bulváru Santa Monica a vydal dvojalbum Nighthawks at the Diner (Asylum, #164 US), zaznamenané ve studiu s malým publikem, aby zachytil atmosféru live show. V UK album získalo stříbro prodejem 60.000 kopií. Byly tam mluvené přestávky mezi písněmi, které přerušovaly volný tok hudby. Waits dále nahrál v září 1976 album Small Change (Asylum), kde vylíčil mnohem cyničtější a pesimistické nálady lyricky v mnoha písních, jako jsou “The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me) (An Evening with Pete King)”, a “Bad Liver and a Broken Heart (In Lowell)”. Album získalo Gold v Austrálii prodejem 35.000 a více kopií, v UK stříbro za prodej 60.000 a více desek. V US Billboard 200 si album ustalo na #89. Mojo ho hodnotil maximem *****, Robert Christgau mu přiřkl B– a Rolling Stone ****, což je fantastické hodnocení.

Tato sada 3 CD obsahuje rozhlasové vysílání během počátečního období kariéry Toma Waitse a nabízí kompletní live performance zaznamenané v ateliérech KRQS FM, Minneapolis (1975), kde se představuje Tom intimně se svým klavírem; v prosinci 1976 v Media Sound Studios — zde je v průběhu mezi čísly Tom dotazován moderátorem rádiostanice; a v roce 1977, zpět v My Fathers Place venue, na Long Island village of Roslyn, v bývalém bowling klubu na 19 Bryant Avenue, kde později vystoupili The Police, James Brown, Bruce Sprinsteen, Mighty Diamonds a Joan Jett. Osobnostmi tohoto rádia byli Denis McNamara, fotograf My Father’s Place Steve Rosenfield a zakladatel klubu Michael "Eppy" Epstein.

•   In 1975, Waits moved to the Tropicana Motel on Santa Monica Boulevard and released the double album Nighthawks at the Diner,recorded in a studio with a small audience in order to capture the ambience of a live show. The record exemplified this phase of hiscareer, including as it did the lengthy spoken interludes between songs that punctuated his live act.
•   Waits recorded Small Change (1976), which portrayed a much more cynical and pessimistic mood lyrically, with many songs such as ThePiano Has Been Drinking (Not Me) (An Evening with Pete King) and Bad Liver and a Broken Heart (In Lowell).
 Small Change, which was preceded by the double A–side single Step Right Up/The Piano Has Been Drinking, was a critical andcommercial success and far outsold any of Waits' previous albums. With it, Waits broke onto Billboard's Top 100 Albums chart for the firsttime in his career (a feat he would not repeat until 1999 with the release of Mule Variations).
