✹ Můj nový objev navzdory všemu. Austin Crane je přibližně na úrovni Devendry Banharta, Father John Mistyho, Kurta Vilea, Josepha Arthura a desítek bardů, kteří se ještě na stránkách PinJi budou objevovat v budoucnu. „Rhododendron“ je album o přesunech, přejezdech, o odchodu, ale také o příjezdu, dokumentu o cestách mezi tím vším.
✹ Album bylo nahráno na dvou místech. V Portlandu v Oregonu se Crane spojil s producentem~inženýrem Chaz Bearem z Toro Y Moi. Dlouholetí přátelé a spolužáci z University of South Carolina, Bear a Crane položili základy pro album během čtyř dnů a nahráli všechny nástroje se záměrem udělat čtyři písně. Zbývající skladby byly zplozeny v Seattle ve Washingtonu spolu s producentem~inženýrem Trevorem Spencerem (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes). Když předtím pracovali na předcházejícím vydání alba od Valley Maker [„When I Was A Child Cover“ (2015, Brick Lane Records)], jednání Spencera a Cranea ohledně druhého (pro zasvěcené — třetího) alba — „Rhododendron“ se zaměřovalo na imaginativní a dráždivě orientovaná aranžmá, která měla zůstat na jednoduché bázi písní středních temp, v souladu s potřebami jednotlivých písní. Album zachycuje bubeníka Jamese Baronea (Beach House, Tennis) a baskytaristu Elijaha Thomsona (Crystal Lewis, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Richard Swift, Everest, Two Sheds, Joe Henry, Father John Misty, Eisley) společně s Brandonem Camardou na trumpetu a Andrew Swansonem na saxofon. Amy Fitchette, dlouholetá spolupracovnice, jejíž kořeny s Valley Maker se táhnou zpátky k Jihovýchodu, poskytuje bohatě vrstvené vokální harmonie v šíři celého alba, čímž zakotvuje albu bohatý a prostorově košatý zvuk.
✹ Craneův prorocký a apokalyptický jazyk utváří texty do hloubky, ale jeho pohled není vázán dogmatem. Místo toho využívá metafor víry k prozkoumání nevyslovenému a čistě k navigaci na křižovatku víry, času, místa a politické současnosti. Hodně z toho, co bylo napsáno, směřovalo až k prezidentským volbám v USA v roce 2016 a v následujících měsících, když Crane cestoval kvůli svým doktorantským studiím, dále Austin zpává o migraci, hranicích a vyjádří se k humanitárním otázkám. Řekněme, že album se hýbe tím, co znamená sdílet prostor s ostatními, jako populární politické diskurzy, které se točí kolem těch, co se cítí být ze společnosti vyloučení. Je to kompaktní, sevřené album bez hitů, ovšem zdůrazním písně „Beautiful Birds Flying“, „Baby, In Your Kingdom“, „Be Born Today“ a „Wonder“.

✹ Valley Maker, the folk project of South Carolina~born/Seattle~based songwriter Austin Crane, releases his Frenchkiss Records debut Rhododendron today. Valley Maker’s music is a musing and wandering brand of folk, and the album is a collection of ten exquisite tracks inspired by Crane’s PhD studies in Human Geography, namely the politics of migration and borders. Crane’s songs convey a sense of humanitarianism in today’s fraught political climate. The Line of Best Fit writes, „Valley Maker are able to find light and hope within the cracks,“ and Exclaim says, „Crane moves forward and tries to find brightness in the world.“
✹ With a cast of collaborators that includes Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi (who contributed instrumentals and produced half of the album’s tracks), producer Trevor Spencer (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes), Beach House drummer James Barone, and Father John Misty bassist Eli Barone, the sound of Rhododendron runs rich and deep.

✹ Throughout Valley Maker’s Rhododendron, Austin Crane, who is currently pursuing a PhD in Human Geography, maintains a focused effort to parse contemporary America, including its exclusionary migratory policies. It’s not the first time academia has influenced Crane’s songwriting — his 2010 debut record, which centred on stories from the Book of Genesis, was his senior thesis project. While the idea of an album washed in academics sounds like a recipe for blandness, Crane’s lyrical nuances are enough to keep your attention.
✹ The sonic style of Rhododendron is akin to the fog of Crane’s home base of Seattle. The songs are dense and gloomy, anchored by Crane’s thunderous guitar playing, and his flat, albeit engaging, vocals. While this thick soundscape on songs like „Be Born Today“ and „Wonder“ feels like an impending thunderstorm that doesn’t break, elsewhere this steadiness nicely counteracts Crane’s anxieties and the sense of doom that is ever~present on the record. On the verbose „Baby, In Your Kingdom“ or the quick tempo „Light On the Ground,“ for instance, Crane moves forward and tries to find brightness in the world.
✹ Tucked in the dense brush of Rhododendron, in the soft~pop standout „Rise Up,“ lies Crane’s key message: to stand up for inclusion. On this track he calls out his „foolish nation“ and cries „the end is nigh,“ but Crane also takes the time to reminds us that it doesn’t have to be the end if we, as he repeats, rise up. ✹ https://exclaim.ca/
