 Wooden Wand — Azag-Toth (2014)

USA Flag              Wooden Wand — Azag–Toth
•   Wooden Wand, the ever–shifting stage name of singer and multi–instrumentalist James Jackson Toth, personifies the modern blend of folk and psychedelia.
•   James Jackson Toth, aka Wooden Wand is seemingly riding an ongoing wave of rampant and uniformly brilliant songwriting, having already put out the instant classic Farmer’s Corner earlier this year, but the more succinct AZAG–TOTH in this quarterly presents Toth at his most instantly listenable. He remains above all a virtuoso wordsmith and storyteller, running with the simplest of arrangements as on Farmer’s Corner, and always keeping his wandering mind, and desperate characters front and centre.
•   The range of human experience in AZAG–TOTH’s relatively paltry half hour is tremendous, with the penultimate ‘Collateral Damage’ as a truly shining example of Toth’s outright mastery of gentle power, and everyday poetry.

Wooden Wand•   James Jackson Toth, known to the world as Wooden Wand, is a maverick, good~hearted troubadour whose blend of smoky Americana has been garnering plaudits for the last decade. Unafraid to mix psychedelic workouts with sweet and soulful country, his varied and prolific output has resulted in a wealth of lyrically rich songs; the kind whose lines stick in your head for a lifetime.
•   Wooden Wand is the band and pen name of James Jackson Toth — a virtuoso songwriter of the mythic variety, and easily one of my favorite living songwriters. No accurate account of all Wooden Wand releases has ever been made, but according to various web logs, the count could be anywhere from 26 to 103, and AZAG — TOTH is the latest, for the brief now, in that epic American mythology.
•   Like many of my favorite Wooden Wand records, AZAG–TOTH was recorded at home by James onto his trusty Tascam 8 Track digital recorder without band or producer. Just pure song, story, and syllabic transmission from the man himself.
•   In this current world of music there are LPs, EPs, Cassettes and CDs, side projects and digital streams, and let me just tell you that this 8 track, 30 minute album holds up to all of my favorite Wooden Wand records. The songs are beautiful, clear, and immediate. Each character and melody takes on a new subtle layer with each listen as a new clear favorite song emerges with each listen too. James says that album opener the Parrot “is based on Flaubert’s Un Coeur Simple” and of the album that he was exploring the musical idea of Metempsychosis.
•   Calling James one of the most under rated songwriters as I recall on Facebook someone say someone did just can’t be true, as everyone I know thinks he is one of the best. In fact, here is what Michael Gira said of James for his awesome YGR release Death Seat:
•   “James Jackson Toth’s got that picaresque quality that Dylan had in his heyday, wherein the shambolic narrator undergoes various travails and epiphanies — harrowing, bleak and darkly comical — in the course of a narrative, then leaves you mystified, both smiling and sad.” — Michael Gira (Swans / YGR )
•   I could give a play by play about how genius each of these songs is, but no need. They are sonically self evident — just listen. (Seth Olinsky) Fortaken: https://www.midheaven.com/ + http://woodenwand.bigcartel.com/product/wooden-wand-azag-toth-cassette-download
Artist Biography by Charity Stafford
•   Wooden Wand is the alter ego of Brooklyn–based singer and multi–instrumentalist James Jackson Toth, who alters the band name according to whim from one project to the next. Most often working in collaboration with the free improv experimentalists the Vanishing Voice, Wooden Wand mixes folk, jazz, psychedelic, and noise rock influences into a singular blend that exemplifies the scene alternately dubbed alt–folk, freak folk, or the New Weird America. Along with a surfeit of obscure and often self–released singles and CD–Rs, higher–profile releases like Second Attention and James and the Quiet began to widen Wooden Wand’s audience.
