Young The Giant — Mind Over Matter
♠ Far from paralyzed, even if the whole is less than the sum of its parts.
♠ Melodies are fresh and it just makes me feel good listening to it...my favorite new album.
♠ Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen — who found time to assist on this project around sessions with Paramore and Tegan & Sara — Mind Over Matter is the second album from the California alt rock quintet Young the Giant. It builds on the sound of their Band of Horses-inspired, 2010 self-titled debut and finds them pursuing an original direction grounded on driving, intricate rhythms and heavier guitars. The lead single, October 2013's "It's About Time," is featured.

REVIEW
•• By Bernard Perusse, January 19, 2014. 2:48 pm • Rating: ****
•• There was no way to predict the transformation of Young the Giant from popular, but only mildly interesting, alt-rockers to bona fide songsmiths, but with their sophomore album, the Irvine, Calif., band — including Pierrefonds native François Comtois on drums — makes an artistic leap that seems a bit shocking.
•• From the sonically inventive Anagram, with its unusual herky-jerky rhythm and undeniable melody, through the wonderful Firelight, which shows they’ve been listening to Nick Drake, and parting shot Paralysis, with its Beach Boys opening and exhilarating major-to-minor shift in the instrumental break, there’s something everyone can get behind in this triumphant disc. Filled with intricate twin-guitar attacks and fascinating layered touches, this one demands — and rewards — repeated listening. Who saw it coming?

•• "For their highly anticipated second album Mind Over Matter, Young The Giant enlisted Grammy nominated producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen, known for his work with such diverse artists as Beck, Nine Inch Nails, Paramore, and M83. Featuring the electrifying lead single "It's About Time," the collection of songs finds the young band challenging themselves both lyrically and musically."

•• Un second album plutôt hésitant qui oscille entre audace et indie rock "mainstream" déjà entendu mille fois. Inégal donc, à découvrir. ♠
Biography
•• Formerly known as the Jakes, Young the Giant began making eclectic indie rock in Irvine, California, where bandmates Sameer Gadhia (vocals), Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar), Payam Doostzadeh (bass), and François Comtois (drummer) all met each other during high school. Following graduation, the guys ditched their respective bands and formed their own outfit, drawing upon their European and Middle Eastern roots to forge a worldly, summery sound. Although the boys left Orange County shortly thereafter to attend different colleges, they continued making music together, eventually deciding to put school on hold and focus on the group instead. The decision wasn’t in vain; by early 2009, they were opening for Kings of Leon and playing shows at South by Southwest. Several months later, they were signed to Roadrunner Records.
•• The Jakes changed their names in January 2010 and began working on an album with producer Joe Chiccarelli, tracking most of the songs at Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles. Featuring cameos by My Morning Jacket’s Bo Koster and Jellyfish’s Roger Manning, the self-titled debut was released digitally later that year. Worldwide promotion of the album continued well into 2011 as it took until the summer to make it physically available in most territories. Numerous TV appearances — most notably a performance on the MTV Video Music Awards show — helped to propel the album and the accompanying single "My Body" into the U.S., U.K., Dutch, and Italian charts.
•• Sessions for a second full-length began with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen in summer 2013. The resulting album, the heavier Mind Over Matter, arrived in January 2014.

LYRICS
Mind over matter
Does it matter to any of us?
Don't change the subject
I'm heavy on your love
I missed that train
New York City: it rains!
Fly to East L.A. in big jet planes
You know you're on my mind
And if the world don't break
I'll be shaking it
Cuz I'm a young man after all!
And when the seasons change
Will you stand by me?
Cuz I'm a young man built to fall!
Mind over matter
I'm in tatters thinking about her
Taste my disaster
It's heavy on my tongue
All the lights aglow
Tokyo: snows
Go to watch the show
Curtain's closed
I'm watching you this time
And if the world don't break
I'll be shaking it
Cuz I'm a young man after all!
And when the seasons change
Will you stand by me?
Cuz I'm a young man built to fall!
I missed that train
New York City: it rains!
Fly to East L.A. in big jet planes
You know you're on my mind
All the lights aglow
Tokyo: snows
Go to watch the show; curtain's closed
I'm watching you this time
Mind over matter
Mind over matter
You know you're on my mind!
And if the world don't break
I'll be shaking it
Cuz I'm a young man after all!
